An Olympic Ode To Cataloging, Maureen E. Schlangen

When my colleagues in the University Libraries gathered on the west portico of Roesch Library June 9 for our own version of the Olympics, our competitive nature, mostly dormant in our daily work, emerged in events that put our teams to the test both physically and mentally: journal Jenga, journal toss, cart racing, book balancing, speed sorting and the hardest scavenger hunt I’ve ever participated in.

But like many things I’ve discovered in my two years in the Libraries, the information science that inspired these trivial games is anything but trivial.

In February 2016, Charlene Maxey-Harris proposed a charge to the UNL Libraries faculty to review the local liaison program. The original charge was for the creation of a team to investigate different, new liaison models and research that will allow the Libraries to restructure the current system to develop more collaborative partnerships with research centers and departments; improve the way liaisons communicate and interact with departments, research centers, and other new campus initiatives; allow liaisons to work in their areas of strength; and find ways to assess the impact of liaison engagement and outreach. Creating an institutional repository (IR) requires much forethought and planning. Setting up a university IR committee will help direct policy, collection goals and encourage faculty participation. There are many things to consider in design such as branding, policy, copyright, collection development, author submissions and discoverability. Publishing in an IR requires original works, and copyright issues arise, especially if authors wish to publish in other journals. Our IR goal was to promote scholarship and encourage faculty to create publishing profile space in SelectedWorks, which can become a virtual curricula vita. In 2014 Nova Southeastern University celebrated its 50^th Anniversary. In conjunction with the anniversary, the NSU Libraries determined a need to preserve the past, present and future of the university by creating a campus wide repository for all scholarship, creative work, and historical materials produced by the university. NSUWorks is a part of the NSU Libraries’ contribution to the university’s ongoing growth and success as an internationally recognized research institution. In 2013, the Marian Library received the papers of the late John S. Stokes Jr., co-founder of Mary’s Gardens, a Philadelphia organization that taught and encouraged the planting of devotional gardens in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mother. Active in civil rights and social justice movements, he was the director of the Wellsprings Ecumenical Center in Philadelphia. He died in 2007.

Among his papers was a collection of promotional brochures from a variety of religious orders. The University of Dayton Libraries have digitized them and made many of them available in eCommons, the University’s open-access institutional repository. In observance of …

As smartphones become ubiquitous, they increasingly influence the way in which students seek and use information. It is important to understand emerging information behavior as a result of wide spread use of smartphones. This paper provides an overview of information behavior in the mobile environment. Gender differences in mobile information seeking are discussed. People interact with mobile information in varied and unpredictable locations or while in transit. The mobility of information engagement is an important issue that human information theory should embrace.

The World Wide Web (WWW) has changed the way that we access information. Digital repositories have become the solution for preserving old materials and the venue to allow open access (OA) to the public. This research paper examined the scholarly library and information science (LIS) literature related to cultural heritage and digital preservation including publication over time, core journals, countries that were the focus of publications, and types of library or cultural repositories that are delineated herein.

Pastime With Good Company: The Songs Of Henry Viii And His Daughter Elizabeth I, Courtney E. Clark

The purpose of this study is to document the surviving musical compositions of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The repositories in London containing each monarch’s remaining body of musical work were examined and the compositions themselves studied. Research was conducted to give further details about each document and its history within the Tudor monarchs’ lives.

Folklore can be defined as “context, performance, attitude, cultural tastes, and the like” (Toelken, 1996, p.7). With folktale and fairy tales, these stories embody cultural values and morals, aiding in learning a lesson or to keep intact a cultural tradition. Many works of literature serve as models for studies in folklore, offering literary criticism, while allowing ancient traditions and modern traditions to be explored (Toelken, 1996, p. 391). Additionally, most, if not all, written folklore, folktales, and fairy tales were originally passed down verbally, from one generation to the next; these stories are part of oral histories (Toelken, 1996). Mississippi has a place in the history of library science. Although libraries appeared in the state as early as 1818 (Halsell, 1975), training for librarians was not available until 1926 at the State Teacher’s College in Hattiesburg, later renamed The University of Southern Mississippi. Southern Miss awarded its first master’s degree in library science exactly fifty years ago, in 1965.

Prior to its digitization, the presenters grappled with many questions. What platform should be used to house the archive? Libraries have guidelines and standards that hold them accountable to be effective institutions (Husid, 2010). The American Library Association’s (ALA) “Library Bill of Rights” sets six basic standards for all libraries to follow. Among other things, these standards encourage libraries to resist forms of censorship, grant access to all types of materials, and resist biases (ALA, 2007). Libraries in particular have been targeted since books and libraries are symbols of cultures (Valencia, 2002). In young adult media there are different roles that parents of the main characters symbolize. The role of parental figures can vary in their original conception and throughout media forms. Readers and viewers have their opinions about how parental figures representation should be characterized. Sometimes parental figures are what drive the stories along in a more interesting manner.
