The Research Repository @ WVU was launched in October 2018 to serve as the institutional repository for West Virginia University and a corner stone of the WVU Libraries Scholarly Communications & Publishing Program. The repository collects, preserves, and showcases creative and scholarly works from WVU faculty, staff, and students and makes them available to readers worldwide.

This report highlights the growth and impact of the Research Repository since its launch in October 2018. Statistics reported are accurate as of November 30, 2020.

Undergraduate outreach about Open Access (OA) lies at the intersection of information literacy and Scholarly Communications. Reframing undergraduates as current and future scholars allows us to treat them as agents within the Scholarly Communications network. Students who have mastered fundamental research skills are prepared to view them through the critical lens of Scholarly Communications in order to learn both how to locate resources and how those resources are created. This educational approach highlights the various barriers scholars can face in the research process, as well as provides an awareness of information privilege.

Outreach success requires persistence, flexibility, savvy marketing, and a focus on the long view. Before our IR, Academic Works, went live in 2016, my colleagues and I gave talks and workshops on open access and other topics. With Academic Works, our efforts now have focus and coherence. Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

Successful scholarly communications outreach centers on a consistent, flexible, and holistic approach. We provide training and support throughout the lifecycle of scholarly communications. Our work has had a strong, positive impact at our college and our institutional repository is the centerpiece of our work.

The value of one-on-one is critical. We reach out to faculty when receiving a Google Scholar alert for new publications. Encouraging self-depositing allows us to train on using the IR and discuss author’s rights and using the SPARC Addendum. We have taken the approach that educating faculty is our ultimate goal.

In fall 2017, we initiated a migration of the University of Western Ontario’s 32 library-hosted journals from the bepress Digital Commons platform to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. This was a response to concerns expressed by librarians and journal editors regarding potential implications of Elsevier’s August 2017 acquisition of bepress, including the possibility that Elsevier might place ads on their journal pages or increase fees for journal-hosting services. Our goal was to mitigate those concerns by ensuring that Western Libraries’ journal platform remained as open and community-driven as possible. In August 2017, APA announced a collaboration with the Center for Open Science to host data and preprints on PsyArXiv. APA journals and those of many other publishers allow posting prepublication manuscripts on the internet. More and more, scholars are pushing against the closed systems of publishing in favor of opening access, narrowly in regards to scholarly publications and more broadly in terms of the entire life cycle of research. As part of the UNLV Libraries’ goal to determine an appropriate level of engagement with ORCID, our pre-pilot investigated the feasibility of a Libraries-led service to populate faculty ORCID profiles with citations for scholarly works, allowing UNLV to better track and promote their research. This project sought to test the requirements and scalability of using currently-available data to populate researcher profiles via the ORCID API, gauging the benefits against the cost in Library resources. Is the Open Access movement meeting its goal of equalizing access to research worldwide? What we learned in libraries and archives during a delegation to Cuba inspired us to pursue this question. Latin America has long used OA to share its research, but it still has not achieved parity in access and contribution with the developed world. Citing webpages has been a common practice in scholarly publications for nearly two decades as the Web evolved into a major information source. But over the years, more and more bibliographies have suffered from “reference rot”: cited URLs are broken links or point to a page that no longer contains the content the author originally cited. In this column, I look at several studies showing how reference rot has affected different academic disciplines. I also examine citation styles’ approach to citing web sources. When you publish a journal article, you sign a copyright or licensing agreement. Do you know what you’re agreeing to when you sign it?

Different journals have different policies: Some journals require you to relinquish your copyright. (You then have to ask permission or even pay to share your article with students and colleagues!) Successful Scholarly Communication At A Small University: Integration Of Education, Services, And An Institutional Repository At Valparaiso University, Jonathan Bull, Bradford Lee Eden

Beginning in 2011, the Christopher Center Library Services (CCLS) unit at Valparaiso University (VU) started implementing new scholarly communication services utilizing two different components: 1. the education and training of library staff in scholarly communication trends and issues; and 2. the implementation of ValpoScholar, VU’s institutional repository (IR) and its associated services. These components allowed for new skills to be developed, new services to be delivered and the library’s digital collections to grow with minimal impact to existing services. This model may provide a framework for other small institutions interested in adding scholarly communication services to their existing library services.
