This presentation was given in recognition of Open Access Week 2017. The presenter provided an introduction to open educational resources--what they are, where to find them, why they're being adopted by higher education institutions, and roles the library can play. The presenter covered details on CARLI's membership in the Open Textbook Network and what that participation means for Milner Library and Illinois State University. The presenter shared what she learned during OTN training sessions she attended in August 2017, including talking with faculty about open textbooks, tracking student savings, and building a program on campus.

Avoiding the reinvention of wheels is especially important to us because of the special challenges of AI Education. AI could be said to be “the really interesting miscellaneous pile of Computer Science”. While “artificial” is well-understood to encompass engineered artifacts, “intelligence” could be said to encompass any sufficiently difficult problem as would require an intelligent approach and yet does not fall neatly into established Computer Science subdisciplines. Drawing on experiences with the JustPublics@365 participatory open online course, or POOC, this chapter discusses the politics and possibilities of open access pedagogy and the broader engagement with communities that academics might achieve. We situated the POOC in New York City’s East Harlem neighborhood and to use the course to form an academic-community partnership. Rather than replicate the broadcast model employed by many MOOCs, in which an instructor delivers education to a broad audience of otherwise disconnected students, the POOC sought to engage participants through open site-based and online experiences, including lectures and class readings posted openly for any member …
