Scholarly communication issues, such as access, research, and the promotion of scholarly communities are at the core of university libraries’ values. This session will demonstrate how to put the values of librarianship into practice at your institution by addressing the publishing needs of your faculty. At Loyola Marymount University, a medium-size, private institution, three librarians were tasked to assist faculty in the publishing process, in particular, help faculty choose credible and reliable journals in which to publish. Investigating the use of gold open access content within subscription content has been a near impossible task until the adoption of the COUNTER 4 statistics in 2014. By reviewing the COUNTER JR1 GOA 2014 reports, two librarians evaluate the gold open access usage at their respective institutions from the following publishers: Elsevier, NPG, Sage, Springer, and Wiley. This initial investigation will be a benchmark for future studies to see if there is any impact on subscribed content or if usage is limited to non-subscribed content from these providers. Graham Stone and Jill Emery have been working to try to develop an outline of some of the best practices for managing open access workflow management in academic libraries. In March 2014, we went live with OAWAL (pronounced owl): a crowdsourced blog/wiki to develop some of these practices and learn what innovators and experts in the field of scholarly communications and open access management have been doing. Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Libraries began exploring the institutional repository (IR) landscape in 2009 with the intention of publishing electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), journals, special collections, images, videos, sound files, or anything else that would fit a need for us. The hosted systems we examined were effective as either platforms for displaying special collections or platforms for managing publishing processes. However, we didn’t find a system that did both of those things well.

University faculty have ongoing pressure to publish their research findings and teaching successes and produce scholarship worthy of tenure. Acceptance to publish an article in a journal can be highly competitive and in some fields of study, there are few journal publication options. With the advent of open access (OA) publishing opportunities, academic libraries are fulfilling a need by supporting sustainable models of scholarly communication that include collaborating with faculty and editors to “start up” an OA journal or convert a traditional print journal to OA. Introduction. In 1999, with no money and no support from any library organization, the author partnered with the International Consortium for Alternative Academic Publication (ICAAP), later renamed the International Consortium for the Advancement of Academic Publication, to found a new electronic journal, The Journal of Southern Academic and Special Librarianship, renamed E-JASL: The Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship in 2002.

Tatiana Bryant’s current research focuses on perceptions of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access amongst scholars who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color, with an emphasis on Ethnic Studies faculty and graduate students. Ethnic Studies is a discipline founded with a unique ethos centered in community building, public scholarship, and racial and social justice. This mission aligns with the philosophy of Open, specifically the creation and accessibility of OER. Despite this ideological alignment, there is a substantial lack of OER for Ethnic Studies.
