Assessment of information literacy efforts can impact college students’ success and retention. Library outreach and partnerships with teaching faculty, especially those targeted towards first-year students, are important. Library involvement with High Impact Practices (HIPs) including Living Learning Com-munities provide librarians with an assessment-rich environment to connect information literacy with student success and retention. This case study sought to assess the impact of information literacy library instruction on first-year Living Learning Community (LLC) Criminology students and asked the follow-ing question: Are the general information literacy class and the Special Collections information literacy class beneficial to Criminology LLC students? What The Folk: Analyzing Folk Music Collections In The Mississippi Library Partnership, David Salinero, Fawn Ussery

This study analyzes the folk music literature collections held in the Mississippi Library Partnership’s 12 library systems. The authors used Dick Weissman’s 100 Books Every Folk Music Fan Should Own as the primary gauge or standard by which to analyze the collections. Authors also examined new titles that Mississippi libraries have collected since the publication of 100 Books in 2014. Findings include an analysis of popular titles and topics, a discussion of folk music and its terminology, and a look at the value of library partnerships.

This study explores the creation of a community engaged partnership between a university librarian and high school librarian. The article underscores the significance of university-school collaborations in ad-vancing K-12 education, offering insights for academic and educational institutions seeking to strength-en community engagement and recruitment initiatives. The authors discuss how the collaboration helped bolster an academic library’s strategic initiative to foster community engagement, particularly with local K-12 schools, and advance college readiness skills for area students. Academic libraries have long supported faculty’s use of reading lists. The need for this support has only increased with the growing popularity of distance learning as well as the shifting resource use patterns brought on by online learning during the covid-19 pandemic. However, reading list software can be pro-hibitively expensive while not always meeting faculty needs, and traditional print-based course reserves can only be accessed in person in the library, creating unnecessary barriers for students. Students’ Perceptions Of An Embedded Librarian In The Doctor Of Business Administration Program, Christine E. Woods

The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ perceptions of an embedded librarian in a Doctor of Business Administration program at a private, Catholic, doctoral-granting university in the Southeast. Quantitative methods were used via an online anonymous survey invitation sent to 137 DBA students using university email addresses. There were 44 students who completed the survey for a 32% response rate. Results of the study indicated almost all students perceived the embedded librarian as helping them complete coursework and improve their research and citation abilities. Students preferred synchronous methods of instruction but only by a small margin compared to …

Ripe For Harvest: Data Harvesting And The Need For E-Lending Privacy Legislation, George M. Farris

Digital lending has revolutionized libraries, adding a trove of available titles and increased accessibility and convenience to patrons. However, handling of patron privacy when utilizing e-lending services is an area that has not received much attention. This paper examines reasons why libraries and patrons alike should be concerned about privacy and the harvest of data when engaging in e-lending through a non-library entity. Examples of mishandling of patron data are discussed in this paper. Recommendations for legislative and non-legislative actions that libraries can take to uphold the American Library Associa-tion core values of intellectual freedom and privacy are also discussed. …

Usability, Visibility, And Style: Libguides Usability Testing To Support Students’ Needs, Tera A. Ray

The study aimed to discover the level of knowledge students have regarding LibGuides, the preferred navigational layout, and how students use guides to conduct research. Ten undergraduate students par-ticipated in a mixed-methods study consisting of semi-structured interviews and usability tasks. The study revealed that the usability test was the first time any of the participants had interacted with a guide, resulting in data free from bias or previous experience. Participants did not exhibit a clear prefer-ence for navigation style, and an emphasis was placed on the importance of an aesthetically pleasing design and a functional search bar. In 1994, Stewart Brand introduced the concept that buildings “learn” or adapt to their changing uses and circumstances over time through addressing maintenance, fixing mistakes, and adding enhancements. This article builds on Brand’s work by applying the concepts to one academic research library that has experienced additions and renovations based on changing assumptions through time of what the build-ing should provide and support. These changes were possible because the building was designed with an open structure that supports change and thus has allowed it to learn and adapt in a financially and envi-ronmentally sustainable manner.
