Library Publishing Curriculum Impact Module: Strategies For Enhancing Discovery And Accessibility (Unit 4), Instructor's Guide, John W. Warren

This unit focuses on the interrelated topics of discovery and accessibility, or how you enable readers to find and use your publications. In the first half of the unit, we will cover best practices in metadata management, common metadata standards and unique identifiers, journal indexing, and search engine optimization. In the second half, we will briefly discuss best practices in accessibility for the web, ebooks, and PDFs, legal and ethical concerns, and universal design.

Macro-Level Diffusion Of A Methodological Knowledge Innovation: Research Synthesis Methods, 1972-2011, Laura Sheble

Use of research synthesis methods has contributed to changes in research practices. In disciplinary literatures, authors indicate motivations to use the methods include needs to (a) translate research-based knowledge to inform practice and policy decisions, and (b) integrate relatively large and diverse knowledge bases to increase the generality of results and yield novel insights or explanations. This review presents two histories of the diffusion of research synthesis methods: a narrative history based primarily in the health and social sciences; and a bibliometric overview across science broadly. The Journal of the Medical Library Association’s (JMLA’s) website now shows a range of article-level metrics (e.g., article views, online mentions, social media attention) for each published article. This editorial explains how ”altmetrics“ may be better than traditional citations in reflecting the impact of JMLA articles on the practice of health sciences librarianship and provides tips for how to increase the impact of your articles.

This study analyzes gender dynamics on the ALA's SCHOLCOMM listserv. Utilizing the listserv archive, the presenters analyzed individual message metadata in order to create a list of participants along with their gender; this was then utilized to correlate the frequency of new messages and replies sent to the list with the gender identity of participants. The results of the study clearly show that male participation on the list is disproportionately large.

INTRODUCTION This study analyzes the gender dynamics of the American Library Association’s SCHOLCOMM listserv in order to determine the accuracy of concerns expressed by participants in early 2016 regarding an overrepresentation of male voices on the listserv. METHODS Utilizing the SCHOLCOMM listserv archive, openly available online, the authors analyzed metadata related to individual messages in order to create a comprehensive list of participants, which was then analyzed to determine gender identity. The ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) registry helps disambiguate authors and streamline research workflows by assigning unique 16-digit author identifiers that enable automatic linkages between researchers and their scholarly activities. This article describes how ORCID works, the benefits of using ORCID, and how librarians can promote ORCID at their institutions by raising awareness of ORCID, helping researchers create and populate ORCID profiles, and integrating ORCID identifiers into institutional repositories and other university research information systems.

A handbook outlining frameworks, concepts, and strategies that pre-tenure humanists and social scientists can employ when making the case for the impact of their scholarship. In place of the suite of metrics and approaches used to evaluate research in the natural and physical sciences, engineering and medicine, more suitable ways of producing verifiable, comprehensible material for the preparation of tenure and promotion files are demonstrated.

This talk will consist of an introduction to the rationale behind the establishment of the field of Scientometrics, which attempts to measure and analyze the body of research done in the sciences. This is primarily through analyzing the connections between scientific journals, articles, and authors. I will cover the foundational works of Price and Garfield in the fields of citation networks and impact factor, respectively, and will give some historical context for these developments. I will also speak briefly on more recent developments in these areas, such as the Eigenfactor, author citation metrics, and (time permitting) alternative metrics.

The scholarly communications program and institutional repository at Grand Valley State University began in 2008, and in its first seven years, grew rapidly. Our team, recently-expanded, now includes three full time positions, and through our repository we host open textbooks, open-access journals, and thousands of documents. Our initial growth was organic and opportunistic, which enabled this initiative to successfully take root in the University Libraries. The next challenge for our scholarly communications program is to make sure those early roots are strong and healthy, so that we can sustain our initial success through the next seven years and beyond.

The Christopher Center Library has no dedicated employees who work solely with its IR, ValpoScholar, and instead relies on a mix of interns and other employees to create records and upload works in their spare time. The OPUS repository at Governors State University, University Park IL was launched in May, 2014. The Repository replaces Dspace. Materials in the University Archives were reviewed for possible candidates for digitization and utilization of the Digital Commons Journal series structures for optimal showcasing of archived content of these defunct journals that originated at the University. DePaul University Library created a suite of digital services to support faculty projects which addressed common hurdles to repository adoption. In a faculty survey we ran in the fall of 2014, faculty reported an unawareness of the repository, uncertainty of how they might use it. However, they also reported that they placed value on the repository services we presented to them and a desire to hear more information. Anecdotally, we also heard the common refrain that faculty are too busy and too technologically challenged to engage with the repository on their own. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine recent trends that have affected University Presses. The increased reliance on digital resources and fiscal constraints within higher education has forced University Presses to re-evaluate their position with the scholarly communication system. Responses include an increased focus on partnerships, new forms of publication, changing business models, and better meeting customers’ needs.

Design/Methodology/Approach – The authors have reviewed publications on University Presses from the last five years and added their viewpoints on current and future trends.
