Co-Teaching Relationships Among Librarians And Other Information Professionals, Ann Medaill, Amy W. Shannon

Collaborative Librarianship

This article uses the co-teaching experiences of workshop instructors at the University of Nevada, Reno Libraries as a basis for an in-depth exploration of the factors that lead to successful co-teaching arrangements among librarians and other information professionals. The experiences of these instructors demonstrate that co-teaching can provide numerous benefits: It can enhance the learning experience for students, it can provide a method for refining teaching skills, it can promote successful collaborations across departments, and it can bring innovative ideas into the classroom. Drawing on collaboration research from the Wilder Foundation, this study found that successful co-teaching relationships are characterized …

Librarian-faculty relations are essential to library collection development. This paper discusses, first of all, the reasons for the customary disconnect between librarians and faculty in light of their different priorities, visions, expertise, and status. In an attempt to bridge the librarian-faculty separation, a horizontal strategy is proposed focusing on financial collaborations between the library and other academic departments on campus, such as adopting the balanced budget, fair and rotated resource allocation, and prioritized investment through providing a General Reserve Fund. Receptivity To Library Involvement In Scientific Data Curation: A Case Study At The University Of Colorado Boulder, Kathryn Lage, Barbara Losoff, Jack M. Maness

Increasingly libraries are expected to play a role in scientific data curation initiatives, i.e., "the management and preservation of digital data over the long-term." This case study offers a novel approach for identifying researchers who are receptive toward library involvement in data curation. The authors interviewed researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and, after analysis, created eight design "personas." Each persona represents an aggregation of researcher attributes and can be used to target strategic relationships for nascent or emerging data management initiatives. These personas are applicable to any academic library seeking to provide data curation support.

In the past few years, academic libraries have faced many significant challenges. Due to the financial crisis, the cuts to library collections have caused an evolution in the philosophy of collecting, accessing, and delivering information. Financial constraints have resulted considerations of a “just-in-time” collection philosophy, where libraries have explored new models of collecting information and delivering content to their patrons. Collaborative Librarianship caught up with Marvin Pollard to discuss this issue.

In early 2007, staff from the University of Minnesota Libraries and the Office of the Vice President for Research began a collaboration to present a workshop covering grant resources. The session introduced faculty, staff, and graduate students to four key databases of external granting opportunities as well as intramural funding sources. We explain the context, development, and implementation of this ongoing, popular workshop; mention extensions of the workshop effort; and hope to inspire fellow librarians to identify and explore routes to broad institutional engagement.

It covers the various forms of library consortia: formal and informal as well as cooperative interchanges, including partnerships for resource sharing. A recent outreach project brought together the American University of Afghanistan and four world renowned US universities with branch campuses in Qatar’s Education City. Librarians in Qatar often collaborate with each other, but this unusual effort was the first time their collaboration reached across international borders to extend assistance to another country. The experience became a cultural exchange that brought together these dramatically different worlds. As LYRASIS ends its groundbreaking first year, we conducted in-depth personal interviews with the library pioneers and change agents who participated in the creation of the nation’s largest membership organization serving libraries and information professionals, formed from legacy organizations in the Mid-Atlantic region (PALINET), the Southeastern region (SOLINET), and the New England region (NELINET). Librarians at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) University Libraries developed the “Student Affairs Connection” program in order to market the Libraries to students in co-curricular settings and to collaborate more closely with the Student Affairs Division. From July to October, 2008, Laura Crossett, Joseph Kraus and Steve Lawson organized the Library Camp of the West (http://librarycampwest.pbwiki.com/). This was an unconference that took place on October 10, 2008 at the University of Denver. The authors used many technology tools to organize the event, such as email, wikis, blogs, two tools from Google, the Doodle scheduling Website, Flickr and more. This article will explain how they used those tools to prepare for the unconference.

Academic librarians are often physically and intellectually isolated at their institutions, and they need to accept much of the blame. Professional literature shows that librarians continue to argue against the responsibilities of tenure, despite the fact that in two of the three usual rubrics of tenure and promotion—namely publication and service—the expectations for both teaching faculty and librarians are generally the same. Four years ago I finished my first major project for a library, an intranet complete with the ability for the entire staff to edit pages, contribute content and collaborate together virtually. I was so excited about this development, that I not only encouraged the staff to use the intranet for every bit of their day-to-day work, but I also started finding other ways that librarians could collaborate together more efficiently using technology. For this reason, when the Collaborative Librarianship staff approached me with the offer of writing this column, I made the logical decision and started writing.
