A Building Progress Report: What Ekstrom Library Has Learned, 2006-2024, Bruce L. Keisling, Robert E. Fox Jr

The Southeastern Librarian

In 1994, Stewart Brand introduced the concept that buildings “learn” or adapt to their changing uses and circumstances over time through addressing maintenance, fixing mistakes, and adding enhancements. This article builds on Brand’s work by applying the concepts to one academic research library that has experienced additions and renovations based on changing assumptions through time of what the build-ing should provide and support. These changes were possible because the building was designed with an open structure that supports change and thus has allowed it to learn and adapt in a financially and envi-ronmentally sustainable manner. System Migrations: Best Practices And Lessons Learned, Michelle Ganz, Laura Slavin

The Southeastern Librarian

Two library professionals, a technical services librarian and an Archivist, describe their workflows during a system migration to OCLC Worldshare Management Systems from multiple existing systems at Lincoln Memorial University Carnegie Vincent Library. The migration was difficult at times and had some unexpected outcomes, but the end result was excellent for the students and the faculty of the university. The librarian and archivist provide suggestions to help other librarians and archivists during the process of a migration. Challenges And Opportunities In Providing Academic Library Services To Incarcerated Higher Education Students: A Case Study From A Tennessee State Prison, Ryan Yoakum, Caroline Fleming

The Southeastern Librarian

This case study describes the Belmont University Library’s partnership with a Tennessee men’s prison to provide access to higher education. The program has led to challenges relating to communication, circu-lation, cataloging, and collection development. These library services are necessary to provide students with access to information not only for their academic endeavors, but also for their own well-being and growth. This paper explores possible solutions to the information deficit of incarcerated students and how the library can support the needs of an underserved population.

Libraries' discussion of disabilities is normally focused on the patrons who are served and not the em-ployees who work within the walls of the institution. The population of adults with disabilities in the United States is growing, and the current research results show that the number of librarians who iden-tify as having disabilities is not close to equally representing the population in the profession. A Study Of The Collection Development And Usage Of Vinyl Albums At Huntingdon College From 1970 To The Present, Daniel N. Dubei

The author reviews the history of collection development of the vinyl collection at Huntingdon College. With interviews from current and former faculty and staff, the author shows how donations of vinyl al-bums helped propel the extensive quantity of albums. The author discusses how the collection circulated throughout the 1970s to the 1990s, when CDs arrived on the scene. The quick transition to digital streaming along with short staffing has caused these vinyl albums to sit, neglected in a classroom, un-used for decades. The vinyl collection also does not have enough cataloging data for easy discoverability and circulation. The author collaborated …
