Any Shape Or Form: An Online Module For Teaching Medical Students Citation Management In Residency Settings, Erica Heasley, Robyn Rosasco

Objective: To describe how the library’s online tutorial for medical students, “Introduction to Citation Management Tools,” was created and integrated into the College of Medicine’s Residency Preparation Boot Camp. Implemented in 2017, passing the tutorial is still a requirement for completing the boot camp.

Methods: In 2017, the Maguire Medical Library was asked by undergraduate and graduate medical education faculty to create a citation management tutorial for 4th-year medical students preparing to commence their respective residency programs. Objective:

This study uses survey research methods to gain a deeper understanding of the institutional repository (IR) landscape in medical schools and academic health centers.

Methods:

Members of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) were surveyed about their IRs. The authors used a mixed-methods approach of a survey and qualitative content analysis to identify common themes.

Results:

Survey results indicate that a large majority of responding medical schools and academic health centers have or are implementing an IR (35 out of 50, 70%). Of these, 60% (21 institutions) participate in an institution-wide IR rather than administer their own …

Background: In the development of a new institutional repository, library staff at a large health system were faced with building an organizational structure that would be meaningful to both internal and external users. The health system context meant unique challenges designing a taxonomy that supported end users as well as institutional goals and branding. Health systems have unique user needs for specialized collections and organizational schemes. With a comparatively large volume of items being added there are also concerns with the backend structures to accommodate the institutions’ large research output.

Background: While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.

Institutional Repository Workflow, Project Management, And Outreach In A Remote/Online Library Environment, Daina Dickman

In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository, primarily staffed by a librarian located in Oregon and a library assistant located in Montana with occasional help from other Library Services staff. Workflow and communication standards had to be created that would allow library staff in multiple locations and time zones to seamlessly launch, populate, and manage the institutional repository. Outreach, instruction, and promotion tactics had to also be created to reach researchers and clinical staff across six states and 100+ locations.

The United States is the top producer of HIV/AIDS related research, followed by the UK, South Africa and China. In terms of the relative activity in HIV/AIDS research, output is highest in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria, reflecting the high priority of this research in countries where the disability-adjusted life years lost due to HIV/AIDS per 100,000 individuals is high, along with the strong research culture in these countries.

Use of research synthesis methods has contributed to changes in research practices. In disciplinary literatures, authors indicate motivations to use the methods include needs to (a) translate research-based knowledge to inform practice and policy decisions, and (b) integrate relatively large and diverse knowledge bases to increase the generality of results and yield novel insights or explanations. This review presents two histories of the diffusion of research synthesis methods: a narrative history based primarily in the health and social sciences; and a bibliometric overview across science broadly. This study compares and contrasts InfoTrac and ProQuest primarily as full-text resources to supplement retrieval of references contained in the CINAHL database. These databases are analyzed by examining their scope in terms of the number and types of serials covered within specific areas using Ulrich's subject headings. Another important aspect of this study relates to the effectiveness of the two search engines for end-user retrieval and collection development.
