Many universities are encouraging study abroad and international service-learning opportunities to provide their students with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate successfully in an increasingly global environment. Academic librarians have unique opportunities and perspectives which enable them to participate in the educational mission of the University. During a trip to Mexico, two librarians from the University of Maryland recognized an opportunity to engage students in a learning service opportunity in Nicaragua. English Abstract:

The current citational practice in Western scholarship is ideologically loaded, being far more suited to a written economy than a primarily oral culture in which knowledge is preserved in memory and disseminated through repeated performance. The impact of orality on musical scholarship should be more closely investigated; African scholars have all too often become informants rather than theorists of their own traditions. It is therefore proposed that the routine citation of a body of scholarship developed without Africa's historically-specific intellectual needs and ambitions in mind should in fact be discouraged.

Abstract

This article addresses the role of major literary award-winning books and authors in the medium-sized academic library. It details a study performed at Bradley University’s Cullom-Davis Library in early 2006. The project surveyed award-winning books held by the library at the time of the study. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate past selection performance of these materials, to provide data on items that the library needs to acquire and to encourage library faculty to watch for and make use of literary and other prize winning materials. The publication of GLQ 12.1 in December 2005 marks the moment when we officially take over from Carolyn Dinshaw and David Halperin as the new co-editors of the journal. Although it's a transition that has been some years in the making (Annamarie first came on board as Associate Editor for Volume 9 and has been a co-editor for Volumes 10 and 11, and Ann was associate editor for Volume 11), Volume 12 represents the beginning of a genuine partnership between the two of us.

The Use Of Scholarly Monographs In The Journal Literature Of Latin American History, Meiyolet Mendez, Karen Chapman

Abstract

This study explores the use of the monograph in the journal literature of Latin American history through a reference study of Hispanic American Historical Review for the years 1985, 1995 and 2005. The authors found that the use of monographs as secondary sources increased over time. Monographs in Spanish and Portuguese were heavily used, although English was the predominant language. Distribution of publication dates varied somewhat over the period, with less use of works from the previous five years in 2005. The most frequently-cited publishers were university presses. This article brings to light the historical context of El Paso’s unknown and uncelebrated connection to the legendary Casasola family photo dynasty in Mexico. The local El Paso Casasola portrait studio photographer and owner did not capture iconic Mexican Revolutionary images like those of his contemporary famed photographer family members in Mexico City, but instead he recorded the visual memory of ordinary individuals and families residing in the US/Mexico border region.

MA Thesis: As a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the United States’ war with Mexico (1846-48), the inhabitants living in the territory occupied by the United States (northern half of the Mexican Republic) were left to make hard decisions as to their national identity and loyalties. Those citizens residing in the territory known today as the Southwestern United States were provided by the Republic of Mexico the opportunity to emigrate to Mexican soil in order to retain their Mexican citizenship. Computer networking is making it possible to think about completely new ways of organizing and contributing to knowledge in scholarly disciplines. One of these new ways is hypertext, which still lacks a general model or metaphor, but which generally involves electronic links between different texts. This paper proposes an applied model of hypertext termed TESH (Traditional-Established Scholarly Hypertext). The lack of attention afforded the gay, lesbian, and alternative press in mainstream periodical indexes has a serious, detrimental impact on the nature of AIDS information available to students of the epidemic. Indexers and database search services must end their policy of excluding the gay/lesbian and other community-based periodicals in order to provide adequate coverage of AIDS information.
