Information Literacy And The Future Of Digital Information Services At The University Of Jos Library, Vicki Lawal
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper highlights current developments in digital information resources at the University of Jos Library. It examines some of the new opportunities and challenges in digital information services presented by the changing context with respect to Information Literacy and the need for digital information literacy skills training. A case study method was employed for the study; data was collected through the administration of structured questionnaires to the study population. Findings from the study provide relevant policy considerations in digital Information Literacy practices for academic libraries in Nigeria who are going digital in their services.

The Undergraduate As Public Scholar: Digital Scholarship And Information Literacy, Allegra Swift, Jessica Davila Greene, Dani Cook
Digital Initiatives Symposium
Libraries are at the nexus of an expanded definition of scholarship that changes how we teach information literacy to undergraduates who are not only information seekers, but also creators of new knowledge. Their academic works have been shared farther and are accessed more often than traditionally published forms of scholarship. While the definition of a “scholarly work” is still understood by most in the academy as a peer-reviewed journal article or monograph published by a prestigious academic publisher, this narrow construct is being challenged by undergraduate scholarship that is accessed, cited, and engaged in a global scholarly conversation. This crucial …

Digital Literacy Adoption With Academic Technology: Namely Digital Information Literacy To Enhance Student Learning Outcomes, Nancy Adam-Turner
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This study explores Arts & Science faculty and librarians’ attitude of learning theory and perceptions of digital literacy (DL) and how digital information literacy (DIL) might improve and enhance student learning outcomes. Digital literacy (DL), information literacy (IL), and digital information literacy (DIL) consists of interaction with academic technology (AT) programs and tools. The objectives are: the rise of IL within the parameters of DL and discuss the birth of DIL, examine the modes of adoption and explore the levels of inclusion for faculty and librarians’ concepts of DL with DIL instruction with AT, define the IL phenomenon, and how …

Scalar, Tensor, And Ethics In Digital Asset Management, Allegra Swift, Craig Dietrich
Library Staff Publications and Research
This working group will foreground Scalar, a Semantic Web-based scholarly publishing system, and its developing “spin-off” application, Tensor, the latter created specifically for the collection and management of media from a variety of digital archives. The group will explore issues in access and use of digital archives, particularly around ethics and global citizenship when scholars work with media assets to create online digital scholarship. There is a lack of awareness of risk and ethics to guide the creation of such software, especially amplifying issues related to marginalized groups, sensitive data, and the confusion around the use of content that is …
Mapping Of Digital Literacy Skills, Allison Kavanagh
Mapping Of Digital Literacy Skills, Allison Kavanagh
Support services (Former ITT) - Other Resources
In 2013 DIT developed a set of graduate attributes known as the “Five E’s”: Engaged, Enterprising, Enquiry based, Effective and Expert in chosen subject discipline. Each of these five attributes is comprised of several additional attributes, one of which is digital literacy.
This presentation explains what digital literacy is, why it is an important attribute for our students and graduates to develop, and discusses practical ways of creating a mapping between a programme’s assessment methods and the digital literacy graduate attribute.

Library Association Of Ireland Task Force On Information Literacy (Tfil): Challenges And New Directions, Philip Russell, Claire Mcguinness, Jane Burns
Support services (Former ITT) - Conference Papers
This paper outlines the work of Library Association of Ireland’s (LAI) Task Force on Information Literacy (TFIL), which was convened in 2011 to make recommendations to the LAI for the development of a cohesive national strategy for information literacy education and advocacy across all LIS sectors in Ireland.
The paper will outline the background to the development of TFIL and how the group came together to advance the recommendations of the LAI Working Group on Information Literacy (WGIL – 2006-2008). TFIL is represented by all library sectors and the paper will describe how TFIL has played a significant role in …

Peer Support For The Development Of Information And Digital Literacy Skills At The Institute Of Technology Tallaght, Philip Russell, Gerard Ryder
Support services (Former ITT) - Conference Papers
This paper presents the work of the Peer Assisted Learning Support Programme (PALS) at the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) which was initiated in September 2014.
All first year students at ITT Dublin must complete a five credit module called Learning to Learn at Third Level (L2L). This module was introduced in 2012 to develop a range of core academic and information and digital literacy skills including research, writing, critical thinking and referencing skills. Collaborative work between the Library at ITT Dublin and the Department of Mechanical Engineering on this module has focused on the development of a range …
Digital Literacy: Why It Matters, Allison Kavanagh, K.C. O'Rourke
Digital Literacy: Why It Matters, Allison Kavanagh, K.C. O'Rourke
Journal Articles
In the past two decades the internet, email, apps, mobile devices and all associated hardware and software have become firmly embedded in everyday life, to the extent that it often feels that we have had no control over this phenomenon. What are the implications for education?
Primary and secondary students today have grown up with the always-connected life which the internet has enabled. However, the credence given to the idea that this makes them fully comfortable and aware as "digital natives" is misguided. The social implications of the internet society – surveillance and the decline of privacy, cyberbullying and so …

Teaching The Network: A Brief Demonstration Of The Internet’S Structure For Information Literacy Instruction, Robin Camille Davis
Teaching The Network: A Brief Demonstration Of The Internet’S Structure For Information Literacy Instruction, Robin Camille Davis
Publications and Research
A basic understanding of the Internet’s physical and operational structure is one element of information literacy. In this article, “traceroute” and “whois” commands are demonstrated as tools that librarians can use to illustrate how the Internet is geographically distributed, how businesses enable and control information sharing, and how to check a source's credibility by determining website ownership. With these tools, students can gain a better understanding of how online information is created, accessed, and affected in ways that may be otherwise invisible.

Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
This qualitative, ethnographic case study investigates digital literacy practices and perceptions of students at an urban public high school in the Boston metropolitan area comprising a racially, ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse student body, an under-studied demographic. The study compares in-school and out-of-school literacy practices and posits the role schools might play in preparing learners. The study examines digital literacy practices among student based on information gathered through focus groups, survey methods, and interviews. Three controlling questions guided the study:
- What digital literacy practices are students in Washington High School engaging in outside of school?
- What purposes do these youth …
