Using Ipads To Facilitate Library Instruction Sessions In A Scale-Up Classroom, Michelle Gibeault
University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study details a trial in which three undergraduate library instruction sessions were conducted on a class set of iPads, within a SCALE-UP classroom. The iPads suggested strong potential as replacements for desktop computers and demonstrated support for key active learning approaches: instant polling, content sharing, and navigation of web pages and databases. The SCALE-UP classroom has made notable contributions in promoting undergraduate learning, and its advantages were found to be extensible to library instruction. The pedagogy which the space is designed to reinforce, collaborative learning segments interspersed with lecture components, seemed to promote student engagement in library instruction sessions.

In this column, the authors discuss emerging research in the field of adult digital literacy acquisition. The authors argue that the field of adult digital literacy acquisition has been under researched, especially in relation to multiliteracies and multimodal literacy practices. Data emerging from a large scale mixed methods study of adults engaged with Learner Web, a selfaccess online learning system, indicate that opportunities to engage in tutor-facilitated digital literacy acquisition, among populations that have been historically left out of the digital revolution, has the potential to change lives. Additionally, the research provides insights into the shifts learners undergo as they …

Library Faculty and Staff Publications
The implementation of a computer-assisted instruction package to supplement college-level bibliographic instruction is described. An outline of goals and objectives for an introductory package and a sample segment explain the technique for creating software locally, allowing for custom design. The use of sample materials permits student-tool interaction in a realistic exercise while also taking advantage of the computer's capabilities. Using locally available hardware with librarian-created text allows for subject-specific lecture presentations, elimination of repetition, and immediate instructional feedback. Results from use of materials by almost 2000 students are summarized.
