Bridging The Gap: Selected Works And Topscholar Galleries, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel, Todd J. Seguin Mr
Kentucky Convergence Conference
Higher education’s scholars utilize online catalogs and library finding aids with ease. However, for the larger community, accessing scholars’ Selected Works and online galleries with topical themes is a helpful intermediary step. Non-scholars often explore and produce scholarship, seek out obscure online sources and gladly volunteer to document cultural resources.Every day historically valuable ephemera is thrown away due to an ignorance of its value to research. Special Collections Librarians partnering with Scholarly Communication Specialists utilize social media to create a gateway and make certain that taxpaying interested parties do not miss the wealth of primary sources compiled over centuries by …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
This presentation discusses a health information literacy project for teens that was a collaboration between librarians and experts in health communications and school administration. They co-developed and co-taught a required high school health course in Spring 2016 using student-centered active learning techniques. The course project was a “Teen Health” website developed by the students.

Can Smaller Colleges Use The Aac&U Rubrics?, Gloria F. Creed-Dikeogu
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
This article introduces the American Association of Colleges and University’s (AAC& U) Value Rubrics to smaller colleges and describes how the Value Rubrics (2009) offered free to download from the AAC&U website may be used as effective assessment tools in academic and information literacy courses and programs on their campuses. This article also describe why and how a small Kansas college has proceeded to use the AAC&U Value Rubrics alongside the SAILS pre- and post-test to assess a for-credit information literacy course offered to undergraduate students.
Client-Based Experiential Learning And The Librarian: Information Literacy For The Real World, Andy Spackman
Client-Based Experiential Learning And The Librarian: Information Literacy For The Real World, Andy Spackman
Faculty Publications
Business schools have increasingly turned to client-based experiential learning to better prepare their graduates with skills and abilities that translate to the workplace. The shift from academic learning to experiential learning requires a corresponding shift in the way librarians approach information literacy. This article explores this trend through the literature and through personal interviews and proposes ways in which library instruction, collection development, and liaison relationships can be tailored to meet the needs of experiential learners.
Information For Inspiration: Understanding Information-Seeking Behaviour And Library Usage Of Students At The Hong Kong Design Institute, Patrick Lo, Wilson Chu
Information For Inspiration: Understanding Information-Seeking Behaviour And Library Usage Of Students At The Hong Kong Design Institute, Patrick Lo, Wilson Chu
Wilson Chu
The process of information- and inspiration-seeking behaviour amongst artists and designers often involve direct observation, note-taking, collecting materials and image samples, recognising styles, analysing movements, patterns, textures, as well as experimenting with different materials and techniques. They also rely heavily on having access to a variety of visual resources, both physical and digital, during the process of inspiration-seeking. However, there have been few studies on how art and design students look for and use information in the digital age, especially in the context of the library. This paper reports on an empirical study of the inspiration-seeking process and other information-related …

The Relationship Between Student Demographics And Student Engagement With Online Library Instruction Modules, Mary Thill, James W. Rosenzweig, Lisa C. Wallis
The Relationship Between Student Demographics And Student Engagement With Online Library Instruction Modules, Mary Thill, James W. Rosenzweig, Lisa C. Wallis
Lisa C. Wallis, MSPH, MS
Objective – To investigate whether there are any demographic trends affecting student engagement with online library instruction which might have implications for practice, the authors designed a case study to examine the relationship between student demographic characteristics and engagement with online library instruction modules in English 102 courses at a single university.
Methods – The authors recruited 181 students from English 102 (ENG 102), a research-based composition course, to participate in the study. ENG 102 instructors asked all participants to complete an online library instruction module embedded in the university’s course management system, either before in-person library instruction or in …

Research Performance Support: Connecting Online Graduate Students From The Lms To The Library, Kim G. Read, Maureen Joyous Morasch
CUP Faculty Research
Universities expand their online graduate programs daily, which challenges academic librarians to maintain research support and information literacy instruction for the growing number of online students. Performance support offers a scalable solution to the problems of limited time and staffing that academic librarians face. When embedded in the learning management system throughout a course or program, performance support provides point of need research help and scaffolds students’ information literacy development. Librarians are able to focus their limited time helping students with their more advanced research needs.

In an effort to improve the users’ experience when accessing our institutional repository, we decided to add closed captioning to all videos. We investigated a number of options such as local streaming servers and vended products, but could not find one that could meet our needs in terms of accessibility, compatibility with our repository platform, and easy of storage and management of videos. We then decided to test YouTube as a possible solution. We were pleased to learn that YouTube had auto closed captioning/transcription, a method of merging previously transcribed text with videos posted in YouTube, and an easy method …

Strengthening Students’ Information Literacy Skills As They Develop Original Research Proposals In A Scientific Process Course, Kimberly A. Reycraft, Nora E. Demers
Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
Scientific Process is a required course for all undergraduate science majors at FGCU. In this course, students develop original research proposals on topics of their interest. Information literacy skills are critical as students must be able to use multiple sources of information to develop their proposals. Biology and library faculty have collaborated to add instruction and assignments addressing research question development, search strategy, citation management, and more. Our goal is to improve students’ information literacy skills as well as the quality and quantity of citations in their final proposals. We will present on this initiative and our preliminary assessment results.

Mapping The Way To Success: Collaborating With Academic Faculty On Library Services And Information Literacy For International Students, Fred C. Pond, Graham Sherriff, Nancy Fawley
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
The University of Vermont recently introduced a formal pathway for international students to gain access to UVM’s degree programs at both an undergraduate and graduate level. The Global Gateway Program (GGP) offers academic courses while providing additional support for the cultural and pedagogical needs of English as a Foreign Language students. International students are a new and expanding demographic with diverse educational backgrounds, language needs and cultural characteristics. We will address strategies to help librarians prepare and anticipate a library’s role with international students, paying particular attention to being a part of the curriculum and introducing principles of information literacy.

Cost Per User: Analyzing Ezproxy Logs For Assessment, Tiffany M. Lemaistre
Cost Per User: Analyzing Ezproxy Logs For Assessment, Tiffany M. Lemaistre
Charleston Library Conference
Cost per use has long been a staple of collection development decision‐making for electronic resources, but what of the users behind those retrieval and search counts? Questions about the interdisciplinary usage of an e‐resource, the depth of integration into a given program or course, and who will miss it if it is cancelled are generally relegated to the realm of anecdotal evidence. Researchers at Nevada State College have made efforts to remedy this gap in knowledge by analyzing EZProxy logs, which can be set up to capture unique user identifiers at the point of authentication into library electronic resources. When …
