Introducing Undergraduates To Open Access And The Power Of Collaboration Between Scholarly Communications And Instruction Librarians, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker, Annie Knight

Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials

Undergraduates are often left out of conversations surrounding open access. While they may not share the same concerns about publishing and prestige as faculty and graduate students, they do consume vast amounts of information, and thus can benefit just as much as those farther in their academic careers by knowing how to find, evaluate, and use open access resources. This presentation highlights a successful collaboration between the presenters in their respective roles as scholarly communications librarian and course developer to create and implement curriculum for a 3-unit information literacy course to teach undergraduate students about open access principles. Once the …

Testing The Guide, Megan E. Fowle Apr 2015

Testing The Guide, Megan E. Fowle

Blogging the Library

This past week, I implemented the user test that I had designed for the new History research guide. I enlisted five participants from the history alias, ensuring that I had one participant from each class year so that I could test the spectrum of students here at Gettysburg. I believe that the testing went great! I used a program called Morae, in which two computers are connected over the internet, with one being used by the participant and the other recording the test. The recordings show mouse movements, as well as video and audio recordings of the participant as they …

Designing A Test, Megan E. Fowle

Blogging the Library

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been developing a new History Research Guide. I have spent time digging through all of the databases that Musselman Library subscribes to in order to categorize them on the new site. I was hoping to make the site as easy to navigate as possible so that students can easily find the right sources. I finally feel that I have reached a point where the new guide is ready to be tested. Assessment Of A Professional Development Program On Adult Learning Theory, Melinda Malik Apr 2015

Assessment Of A Professional Development Program On Adult Learning Theory, Melinda Malik

Higher Education Student Work

Librarians at colleges and universities invested in graduate education must understand and incorporate adult learning theories in their reference and instruction interactions with graduate students to more effectively support the students’ learning. After participating in a professional development program about adult learning theory, librarians in this study reported that, in many ways, they already employed teaching and learning strategies grounded in one or more adult learning theories. They also indicated gaining a greater awareness of student development, enabling them to more successfully tailor their interactions.

Helping The Adult Learner Succeed: How Community College Libraries In Massachusetts Are Serving This Growing Population, Katherine A. Turcotte Apr 2015

Helping The Adult Learner Succeed: How Community College Libraries In Massachusetts Are Serving This Growing Population, Katherine A. Turcotte

Librarian Publications

Education is something that is valued more each and every day. A growing number of people in today’s society realize the importance of education and the increasing need to return to school. As the number of adult learners continues to rise, so too does the need to reach out to this population to make sure they are being presented with the appropriate tools and resources needed to succeed. Because it is theorized that adults (those age 25+) who return to school are likely to enroll in a community college, rather than a four year university, this study looks specifically at …

Operationalizing Success In A Digital Learning Environment Designed To Support Vulnerable Adults, Elizabeth Withers, Jill Castek, Robert Fountain, Drew Pizzolato, Kimberly D. Pendell, Gloria Jacobs, Stephen Reder

Presentations and Publications

This study seeks to examine patterns of successful learning identified when economically vulnerable, underserved, and high-need adults engaged in self-access, tutor facilitated learning to acquire digital literacy. In large part, this diverse population of learners has been left behind in the digital revolution, thus compounding their social, economic, and educational disadvantages. These individuals have unique patterns of engagement within educational endeavors, at times dropping in and out of programs as a result of social and economic impediments that permeate their lives. Traditional means of identifying success in their learning endeavors inadequately describe the paths these learners take on the road …

The challenge of creating information literate college students begins long before freshmen enter the university classroom. This poster details a unique collaboration between a university, a community foundation, and a public school to offer middle school information literacy workshops, using threshold concepts as a basis for its curriculum. This approach to community engagement offers ideas others may want to consider about moving collaborative information literacy initiatives beyond the campus.

When Active Learning Goes Flat, Lindsey Mclean, Elisa Acosta Apr 2015

When Active Learning Goes Flat, Lindsey Mclean, Elisa Acosta

Librarian Publications & Presentations

What happens when an active learning activity goes flat? You rapidly transform your lackluster exercise into an engaging activity midway through the semester! In this presentation we will discuss our instructional design efforts for a required in-person library instruction session for 73 Rhetorical Arts classes (1,273 freshmen). We used elements from both the hybrid approach and gamification techniques. Hybrid, or blended learning is a method of instruction in which students learn through a combination of face-to-face instruction and computer-mediated activities. The paper-based, active learning exercise the students completed in class was “gamified” and transformed into a digital learning object to …

Foundational Assumptions In Threshold Concepts And Information Literacy, Patrick K. Morgan Mar 2015

Foundational Assumptions In Threshold Concepts And Information Literacy, Patrick K. Morgan

Faculty Presentations

This is a critique of the threshold concepts at the heart of the new ACRL Framework.

Models are only tools, and like all tools, will inevitably perform well in certain contexts and poorly in others. Threshold concepts are exactly and only a model/tool, and far from useless.

In a late-January post on the ACRL blog, Lori Townsend and her colleagues responded to some of the negative press threshold concepts had been receiving; in it, we were reminded how productive threshold concepts-based approaches have been in a variety of learning contexts.

My objections can be roughly corralled into two broad criticisms: …

Data Information Literacy And Undergraduates: A Critical Competency, Yasmeen Shorish

Libraries

As a primer on data information literacy (DIL), this column will cover the background of the field and why it is relevant to college and university libraries serving undergraduate populations. This article includes how data information literacy relates to information literacy, competencies associated with DIL, the relevance of DIL to undergraduates, DIL in library instruction, and the reasons for library engagement with DIL. Examining DIL within the larger framework of information literacy can help outreach and instruction librarians engage with a format that may be unfamiliar to them but whose underlying foundation is well-established.
