Experiences Of Informed Learning In The Undergraduate Classroom, Clarence Maybee Jan 2014

Experiences Of Informed Learning In The Undergraduate Classroom, Clarence Maybee

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The same thing can be experienced in a variety of ways. For example, think of a time that you and a friend read the same book, but each got something quite different out of it. Essentially you experienced different aspects of the book. Applying this to higher education, we cannot assume that all students are experiencing their coursework in the same way. In fact, a number of studies reveal that this is not the case. Learning occurs when students begin to experience the thing being learned about in a new way. Learning designs that teach undergraduates to use information require …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Tools For Online Database Instruction, Yvonne Mery, Erica Defrain, Leslie Sult, Elizabeth Kline

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The intent of this study was to evaluate the Guide on the Side (GotS), an online learning tool developed by the University of Arizona Libraries, and a screencast tutorial for teaching information literacy and database searching skills. Ninety undergraduate students were randomly assigned into three groups: group 1 completed a GotS tutorial; group 2 viewed a screencast presenting identical content; and a control group. Each group completed an identical 16-item post-test. An analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences between the control group and both treatment groups; however, there was no statistical difference between treatment groups. Limitations of the study …

Research And The Professional : Navigating A Spectrum Of Legal Resources., Erin K Gow

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Legal research is complicated by the growing amount of information available, and there is evidence that legal practitioners require additional training in order to enhance their information literacy and legal research skills. Librarians have a key role to play in developing legal research training, and examples taken from Middle Temple's library are used to illustrate ways in which librarians can offer beneficial training to their library users. This involves assessing the skills, motivation, and needs of the average library user in order to design legal research training that is educationally sound and appealing to the target audience.

Building A Professional Learning Community At The University Level: A Case Study Of An Information Fluency Initiative, Susan Bennett Slavicz

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An examination of the research regarding the problems associated with student academic writing indicated that two abilities, writing abilities and information literacy skills, intersect, and that an accepted term for this intersection is information literacy. The University of Central Florida’s Information Fluency Initiative recognized information literacy as a key component in developing students’ information fluency skills. This qualitative case study of the initiative used semi-structured interviews, study of documents, and observations to gather data in order to describe how the university planned, developed, and implemented the initiative. Study of relevant literature, narrative analysis (Tierney & Lincoln, 1997), inductive analysis (Hatch, …

Beginning Library & Information Systems Strategies

Scholarly or academic journals are essential resources for doing academic research. While popular magazines like Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report are excellent sources of information on nearly any topic, they are written with the average reader in mind and do not include the depth of coverage that an academic researcher would need. For in‐depth examination of a topic, academic, scholarly publications should be the researcher's first choice.

Lecture-Free Calculus For Science And Engineering, Benjamin Wiles Jan 2014

Lecture-Free Calculus For Science And Engineering, Benjamin Wiles

IMPACT Symposium

Plane Analytic Geometry and Calculus I (MA 16100) is a historically difficult, required course for engineering and science majors. The traditional configuration consists of 250 students meeting in a large lecture 3 times per week and twice per week in smaller recitations of size 40. Additionally, those who repeat the course often continue to encounter difficulty. A scalable re-design has been implemented to attempt to address the needs of students that are not being met in the traditional configuration by diverting resources from lecture to problem sessions and from traditional Q&A recitations to student-driven presentation/collaboration-based recitations. The students work in …

Student Self-Efficacy In Employment Interviews: An Assessment Of A Communication Course Redesign, Jeralyn L Faris

IMPACT Symposium

Communication instruction and practice that increases a student’s self-efficacy in the employment interviewing process is a desired outcome of COM 325, Interviewing Principles and Practices. Self-efficacy outcomes are in the affective domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy and are measureable. Therefore, our study seeks to discover whether increasing time spent in individual performances of in-class employment interviews from 22 to 44 minutes increase students' self-efficacy in their interview performance ability.

Fourteen sections of COM 325 are offered Spring, 2014. Five of these sections are piloting a redesigned version of the course, via Purdue’s IMPACT initiative. The key difference in the five redesigned …

Edps 265: The Inclusive Classroom, Jasmine Begeske Jan 2014

Edps 265: The Inclusive Classroom, Jasmine Begeske

IMPACT Symposium

EDPS 265: The Inclusive Classroom is a foundational, large enrollment lecture course and is taught in a lecture hall with a stadium style seating arraignment. This configuration results in a course that is not student-centered, promotes one-way communication and hinders cooperative learning. Education courses should be structured so that the course in itself is instructive. This course teaches interventions for reaching all students, using techniques that engage students in the learning process. The structure of this course, the physical space and the format should model best practices in the classroom. I will implement and evaluate student-centered instructional strategies and technologies …

Why Are We Doing This? The Role Of Personal Relevance In Developing Biological Information Literacy Using Cyber Peer-Led Team Learning, Jeffrey D Radloff, C Maybee, Maribeth Slebodnik, Nancy Pelaez Jan 2014

Why Are We Doing This? The Role Of Personal Relevance In Developing Biological Information Literacy Using Cyber Peer-Led Team Learning, Jeffrey D Radloff, C Maybee, Maribeth Slebodnik, Nancy Pelaez

IMPACT Symposium

Student-centered learning necessitates that students engage with an array of materials to develop their own understandings, often requiring students to find and critically engage with biological information. This project describes a course (BIOL 131; Biology II: Development, Structure and Function of Organisms) that utilizes cyber Peer-led Team Learning (cPLTL) as a student-centered approach to enhance students’ biological information literacy. Emphasizing the social aspects of learning, students work together in small groups led by a peer mentor using online meeting software. Scaffolded across the first half of the semester, students were given information literacy focused questions as part of a weekly …

Sources: Metaliteracy: Reinventing Information Literacy To Empower Learners, Ann Agee

Faculty and Staff Publications

A review of the book Metaliteracy: Reinventing Information Literacy to Empower Learners, by Thomas P. Mackey and Trudi E. Jacobson. Transliteracy, visual literacy, media literacy, digital literacy, mobile literacy—there has been a struggle for years to define how technology changes the way people understand and use information. For academic librarians, information literacy has been the approach of choice. In one-shot sessions and semester-long courses, we teach students how to determine what information is needed and how to find it, evaluate it, and use it ethically. In Metaliteracy, the authors argue that information literacy as a concept needs to be updated …
