Online tutorials have great potential to reach a large population and to accommodate multiple learning styles anytime and anywhere. This paper describes the management of online tutorials and related concepts in detail. The review of literature method is used to study the variables. The variables under study include the mission, objectives, funding, manpower, in-house creation, outsourcing, incorporation in curriculum, content, type, technology, metadata, discovery services, script design, standards, assessment, professional training, marketing techniques and future goals for creation and management of online tutorials in libraries. A practical model based on literature study and the authors' experience with online tutorials is …

Introduction
We explore the use of a psychometric model for locally-relevant, information literacy assessment, using an online tool for standardised assessment of student learning during discipline-based library instruction sessions.
Method
A quantitative approach to data collection and analysis was used, employing standardised multiple-choice survey questions followed by individual, cognitive interviews with undergraduate students. The assessment tool was administered to five general education psychology classes during library instruction sessions.
Analysis
Descriptive statistics were generated by the assessment tool. Results. The assessment tool proved a feasible means of measuring student learning. While student scores improved on every survey question, there was uneven …

Transforming Our Library Reading Room For A Leisure Reading Collection, Suzanne Roybal
Transforming Our Library Reading Room For A Leisure Reading Collection, Suzanne Roybal
Collected Faculty Scholarship
For our poster presentation, we wanted to highlight the success of our renovated reading room and the addition of a leisure reading collection in an academic library. One of the goals of our library strategic plan is to improve service to our community and to change the philosophical perception of our library so the students would have an inviting place to satisfy both heir educational and entertainment needs. Our drab 1960’s style reading room was the ideal location to refurbish and to locate our new leisure reading collection of books and magazines. To provide a pleasant environment for the students …
Exploring The Political Dimensions Of Information Literacy Through Popular Film., Robert Detmering
Exploring The Political Dimensions Of Information Literacy Through Popular Film., Robert Detmering
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Certain popular films contextualize the access, use, and interpretation of information within a political and social framework. As a result, these films function as alternative pedagogical sites for analysis and critique, facilitating critical thinking about information beyond the library and the classroom, and leading students to a deeper understanding of the fundamental need for information literacy. A conceptual basis for the consideration of film in politically engaged information literacy instruction is provided, supported by a discussion of three relevant films: Jason Reitman’s Thank You for Smoking (2006), Joel and Ethan Coen’s Burn after Reading (2008), and Oliver Stone’s W. …

The 2007 report, College Learning for the New Global Century, outlines a cluster of intellectual and practical skills that are critical components of a liberal education: inquiry and analysis; critical and creative thinking; written and oral communication; quantitative literacy; information literacy; and teamwork and problem solving. The learning outcomes associated with information literacy relate to and incorporate many of the learning outcomes in all of these skill clusters. Participants in this session will address how these information literacy and related learning outcomes can be mapped into student learning experiences at three levels: in an individual course, in an academic sequence …

This article explores the production practices employed by children building personal webpages in a semi-structured afterschool program: the Fifth Dimension (5D). Following a critical Multiliteracies (CritMLs) approach to learning design, this ethnographic study introduced web-building practices to the children of the 5D and followed their production of personal webpages over a 9 month period. By structuring the intervention this way, it was possible to simultaneously observe the development of both the webpage as artifact as well as the child-participant. Along these lines, the study describes the unique and particular social contexts from which personal webpages emerge and develop over time. …

A fundamental concept that students need to understand about performing research at the college/university level is that, contrary to what they may believe or have been accustomed to thinking, the entire sum of human knowledge is not openly accessible to anyone for free via the Internet. Often times, students need to "see it to believe it" –or, more importantly, grasp it–by experiencing first-hand how the library and free web intersect. We should not assume that the divide between what is available freely on the Internet and the content provided by, and only accessible via campus libraries is automatically or commonly …

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The use of interactive online forms can improve the efficiency of data management processes in any organization, particularly ones that rely on the collection of large amounts of data. The work of my capstone project sought to leverage technologies available in the open source community to improve the work-flow of one such organization, the Honors program at Syracuse University. As a result, I focused on transforming the often used paper civic engagement form into an autonomous electronic process. By appropriately following the stages of the systems development life cycle, a systematic approach that focused on planning and security conscious execution …

In 2009, Wright State University Libraries began printing single monographic spine labels with Zebra printers. The process worked so well, we wanted to print serials labels with the printers as well. Because serials labels are not one of the print templates options, we had to make the procedure work with the legacy printing method. These posters will illustrate how we used Zebra TLP 2824 printers with Print Wizard to format and print serials labels.

Everyone knows mobile is hot now, and many libraries are scrambling to add mobile friendly pages. Currently themost complete listing of libraries with mobile sites can be found at the Library Success Wiki site , which lists over40 such sites.I thought it would be helpful to look at these 40+ sites to see what are the common services that have beingoffered to mobile users. To that end, I have created a google doc of the 40 sites comparing their common features.I grouped each feature below according to whether it exists in a mobile site and then choose representativeexamples with images …

This paper reports on the use of podcast audio recordings to assess learning in a hybrid information research course. Evidence of learning that appeared in the audio recordings and how the project affected student learning were investigated. Findings suggest that student-created podcasts can be beneficial in that instructors can see what students learned from the podcast content; students can see evidence of own learning by looking at before and after podcasts; and that students see methods used by other students and reflect on own methods/knowledge.

Writing Information Literacy Assessment Plans: A Guide To Best Practice, Megan Oakleaf
Communications in Information Literacy
Academic librarians throughout higher education add value to the teaching and learning missions of their institutions though information literacy instruction. To demonstrate the full impact of librarians on students in higher education, librarians need comprehensive information literacy assessment plans, composed of instructional program-level and outcome-level components, that summarize the purpose of information literacy assessment, emphasize the theoretical basis of their assessment efforts, articulate specific information literacy goals and outcomes, describe the major assessment methods and tools used to capture evidence of student learning, report assessment results, and highlight improvements made as a consequence of learning assessment.
Building A Seamless Environment For Assessment Of Information Literacy: Libraries, Student Affairs, And Learning Outside The Classroom, Scott Walter
Communications in Information Literacy
Assessment has been a topic of interest in higher education for decades, with its recent growth rooted in a number of scholarly traditions, as well as the broader interest in "accountability" that has been characteristic of American education since the 1980s. Many previous studies have demonstrated that the literature of assessment in higher education is a rich resource for those wishing to identify effective approaches to the assessment of information literacy. This piece invites readers to pay attention to the lessons taught by faculty development experts as well as by scholars of the science of teaching and learning, but also …

Communications in Information Literacy
With the vast amount of information available today, information literacy (IL) education is a critical component of undergraduate education necessary to prepare students for tomorrow's world. Instructors want students to demonstrate critical thinking skills and are often disappointed with student submissions resulting from undeveloped IL skills. Library Instruction programs are often tasked with addressing this educational need and often struggle to find a scalable method to provide IL instruction to the student body. The Information Literacy Education (ILE) Project is an asynchronous learning environment tailored to deliver instruction and assessment. Posited as a customizable option to present IL instruction, this …

Like other college and university departments, academic libraries are increasingly expected to assess their services and facilities. This article describes an initial step in the development of a comprehensive assessment program for library instruction in the Brooklyn College Library. A pre- and post-quiz were developed based on the curriculum for a required library session in an introductory English composition course. The quizzes were designed to establish a baseline for student knowledge of information literacy as well as measure the effect of library instruction on student learning. We also sought to evaluate the suitability of the Blackboard learning management system for …

Communications in Information Literacy
This paper reports the results of a pilot project in which the authors developed rubrics for assessing information literacy in the disciplines and examined whether rubrics are a feasible and effective method for librarians to assess their students' information literacy skills. We developed rubrics for capstone classes in chemistry and psychology based on benchmarks appropriate for each major. We then used the rubrics to assess the research and information literacy skills the students displayed in their papers or projects.
