The objective of this paper session is to explore a case study of library service opportunities to support the unique systematic review needs of researchers in Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences. In this session, we describe the collaboration necessary to provide support and training to these individuals, ways to assess the quality of services, and methods used to ensure individuals receive the blended training needed to successfully undertake the systematic review process. This year’s sponsored, no holds barred health sciences lively lunchtime gathering was open to all. It began with greetings from luncheon sponsor, Rittenhouse. The moderator, Rena Lubker, introduced the session and provided introductory remarks about this year’s three presentations: a commentary on issues that keep us up at night; a report on considerations to make when leaving big deal licenses and entering into new, OA friendly arrangements; and more discussion about the impact of expansions on libraries of academic medical affiliation. All three topics provided fodder for lively discussion at the end.

“When Someone Sees Me, I Am Nothing Of The Norm”: Examining The Discursive Role Power Plays In Shaping Lgbtq+ Health Information Practices, Vanessa L. Kitzie, Travis L. Wagner, A. Nick Vera

This paper examines how discursive power shapes LGBTQ+ community health information practices. Informed by analysis of 10 information world maps drawn by SC LGBTQ+ community leaders, our findings indicate that while community can be a valuable construct to reject mainstream discourses of regulation and correction, it inevitably is fraught and not representative of all LGBTQ+ individuals. Findings can inform strategies for community leaders to facilitate more equitable information flow among members by identifying key structural elements impeding this flow at the community level.

University Of Nebraska Medical Center: Collaborating With Campus Partners In Renovated Library, Emily J. Mcelroy

The McGoogan Health Sciences Library at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) completed a 14-month renovation of two of its three levels, while its top-level remains under renovation. Besides standard library space for studying and collections, the library engaged with campus partners in bringing different services to the renovated library. The newly renovated space includes spaces managed by a range of faculty and student services, such as an E-Learning lab, simulation labs, Faculty Commons, Writing Center, Maker Studio, Reflection Rooms, and inclusion space. The World Café (TWC) methodology is a form of action research that develops collective knowledge among individuals and communities to address shared problems. TWC can complement LIS research and practice that is increasingly participatory and community centric. The potentials and pitfalls for TWC are illustrated by ongoing research examining public library service to LGBTQIA+ communities for health information. The authors used TWC in a community forum between LGBTQIA+ community leaders and librarians/paraprofessionals in [name removed for blind review]. A Reconsideration Of Library Treatment Of Ethically Questionable Medical Texts: The Case Of The Pernkopf Atlas Of Anatomy, Jamie Saragossi, Kathleen Kasten-Mutkus, Laurel Scheinfeld

The Pernkopf Atlas of Anatomy consists of anatomical drawings created by Austrian physician Eduard Pernkopf, an active member of the Nazi Party during World War II. While the book was known for its highly detailed anatomical drawings, in the 1990s it was determined that Holocaust victims were likely used as subjects for the drawings. Using a survey, the authors aimed to gather information about the presence of this monograph in academic libraries today to provide best practice recommendations for academic libraries in their approach to ethically questionable materials.

Parkview Hospital has a long history and with an accumulation of documents and photographs. These historic materials (digital and physical) reside between three Parkview departments: Marketing, Media Services, and the Resource Library. This study carried out the scientometric analysis of road traffic accident research in India from 1977 to 2020. It aimed to examine type of publications with their citations and usage, the year wise publication and citation growth, most preferred journals, authors’ preference of keywords used, collaboration of Indian authors, authorship pattern and most prolific authors, and top contributing organizations. During 44 years of study, 1,132 research items were published and indexed in Web of Science (WoS) bibliographic database. Analysis discovered that number of publications increased from one (0.08%) in 1977 to 182 (16.07%) in 2018 and observed good progress in …

The Civil War Letters Of David W. Voyles, M. D., Mary K Marlatt

Dr. David W. Voyles (1834–1899) of Washington County, Indiana, served as Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon with the 66th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters of Dr. Voyles to his wife Susan, dating from November 1862 to January 1864, provide a glimpse into the mind of an educated, thoughtful man. Voyles wrote eloquently about the war, his political views (Republican and antislavery), and, like so many other soldiers, the lack of letters from home. Archivist Mary K. Marlatt has transcribed and edited the letters. Her introduction provides information on Voyles, his family, his regiment, and his life after …

Background: Changes to our hospital’s performance review process required Clinical Nurse IIIs and IVs to complete an annual Evidence Based Practice (EBP) or Quality Improvement (QI) project in order to maintain or advance their status on the Clinical Ladder. Nurse Researcher met with Clinical Nurse IIs, IIIs and IVs to review the requirements and held Proposal Writing sessions to prepare nurses. All attendees were referred to Librarian-led literature search classes. Researcher met with nurses individually to discuss projects and sent nurses to consult with Librarian. The Health Sciences Library (HSL) at Stony Brook University along with the School of Medicine were motivated to make improvements in seating and hours based on survey results from an LCME self-study. Preparation for the site visit from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education helped to garner resources and support for this initiative. To meet the evolving needs of the HSL patrons, librarians completed an overdue collection assessment project which allowed for 142 new seats, including newly designed spaces and furnishings. Ongoing assessment of the redesigned space will be conducted to evaluate success and areas for continued improvement.

This guide to scholarly activities provides early- and mid-career health sciences librarians with a path to immersing in scholarly activities. The four levels walk librarians through increasing stages of scholarship. Early-career librarians will begin at the first level, navigating from discovering mentors and areas of research interest to level two, publishing a resource or book review and finding their first public speaking opportunity. More experienced librarians will find where they are on the path and continue to build their scholarship all the way to conducting and publishing original research and becoming leaders in their field.

Background: In 2017 a small liberal arts college affiliated with a large western health system was re-branded, and a School of Health Professions was created to prepare for future staffing shortages and to train the next generation of healthcare workers. Use, Perceptions, And Awareness Of Libguides Among Undergraduate And Graduate Health Professions Students, John Carey, Ajatshatru Pathak, Sarah C. Johnson

Publications and Research

Objective–This study investigated usage, perceptions, and awareness of library research guides created using Springshare’s LibGuides among undergraduate and graduate health professions students.

Methods–The researchers recruited 100 health professions students in April 2017 from Hunter College, a senior college within the City University of New York system. Participants were asked to complete a paper survey to ascertain their use, perceptions, and awareness of Springhare’s LibGuides.

Results–Nearly two-thirds of study participants were not aware of library-created LibGuides and 68% had never used this tool. Compared to undergraduates, graduate students were more likely to be aware of LibGuides. The use of LibGuides was …
