Copyright Reform: Imagining More Balanced Copyright Laws, Michelle M. Wu

Earlier chapters of this book provide a history of copyright and libraries in the United States, a review of outdated language in the existing copyright code, and a discussion of actions by both copyright owners and the public to rebalance copyright outside of legislation. This chapter simply imagines what copyright could be if we disregard the known political and legal obstacles. It starts with no constraints, which one might argue is both impractical and foolish. Why spend time discussing what could be when treaties, self-interest, and powerful industry lobbies stand in the way?

Academic and public library collections are developed based on the needs of the communities that surround them. Technology has increased the way users access information, and the way libraries offer information to their users. However, the accessibility of electronic resources for users with print disabilities remains an issue that has yet to have an equitable remedy. This paper identifies the challenges of visually impaired users, the developments in law, the current state of accessibility in academic and public library collections policies, and the current formats and products that are leading the way.

Archival professional dialogue increasingly includes discussion of the power and responsibility of archivists to challenge outdated modes of collection development that focus on documenting the history of the privileged. Following the trend of repurposing library space to meet modern user needs, Western University is undergoing a planned revitalization and renovation of its largest library on campus. As a result, 500,000 items will need to be shifted to other locations or off-site storage. Alumni Oral Histories: A Collaboration Between The Libraries And Development And Alumni Relations, Rebeccca Ciota

This article describes a collaboration between Grinnell College’s libraries and its Office of Development and Alumni Relations on an oral history project in which college alumni are interviewed about their experiences at the college. Such close collaborations between development offices and libraries are rare. This collaboration was successful due to the equal participation of all parties.

Hands-on activity to help participants find a diversity of materials to support their communities and expand their collections. This will range from identifying relevant book and media awards to finding ways to promote these materials. Literature illuminating the relationship between contemporary art and historical archives around the turn of the twenty-first century and how these interactions inform the evolution of archives in a digital multicultural age is the topic of this review. The literature reveals the extent to which art has been a means for members of marginalized groups to address their representation in historical archives, and also a means for archives to connect with a broader audience. Eighteen Blind Library Users’ Experiences With Library Websites And Search Tools In U.S. Academic Libraries: A Qualitative Study, Adina Mulliken

Telephone interviews were conducted with 18 blind academic library users around the U.S. about their experiences using their library and its website. The study uses the perspective that blind users’ insights are fundamental. A common theme was that navigating a webpage is time consuming on the first visit. Issues identified include the need for “databases” to be defined on the homepage, accessibly coded search boxes, logical heading structure, and several problems to be resolved on result pages. Variations in needs depending on users’ screen reader expertise were also raised. Suggestions for libraries to address these issues are offered.

There are not that many articles published about collaborations and cultural heritage collections, although I suspect many unreported activities are being done in the field. Building on the successful 2017 presentation, A Primer in Science and Engineering Collection Development, this presentation will explore a content type that stumps the engineering librarian and acquisitions librarian alike - standards. Technical standards are documents that establish a uniform practice or process for materials, procedures, and products. Each of us uses standards daily - from USB ports to elevators to lights, automobiles, bridges, standardized train tracks, and much more. Standards are prepared and issued by a professional groups, committees, societies, or governmental agencies, and can influence safety and performance and the role of business and manufacturing.

Management of library collections is an inherently collaborative process. Spanning multiple generations, materials are selected that support user communities, striving for the optimization of storage and access at the lowest cost.[i] While established partnerships are crucial for the survival of libraries, within any cooperative network, there exist opportunities for divergent practices. Working with large data sets can be a challenge for both librarians and external stakeholders. Vendors often provide scads of data about the products we use, but sifting through it takes time. Visualization tools exist to help distill meaning from particularly dense data. This talk provides a look at how data visualization approaches can differ based on a variety of organizational factors such as staffing capacity, costs, and specific project requirements. In view of the importance of indigenous knowledge in development process, this paper investigated the efforts of selected federal university libraries in South West, Nigeria in indigenous knowledge collection development and preservation. The University of Kentucky (UK) is participating as a Center of Excellence (COE) for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the Smithsonian Institution, and the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries‘ (ASERL) Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP). This collaborative effort is designed to distribute collection development for all Federal agencies across the entire Southeast.

The presenter will describe how UK has focused its depository collection development efforts on non-COE agencies, and reduced its retrospective collection development for other institutions’ COE agencies.
