Interlibrary Loan Purchase-On-Demand: A Misleading Literature, Gerrit Van Dyk

Many libraries are engaging in interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand without fully acknowledging all of the costs of adding such titles to their collections. This study compares the costs of monograph interlibrary loans and the costs of monograph accession, including staffing overhead costs for both. In order to be truly cost-effective, interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand titles must have a minimum projected circulation, depending on the base price to purchase the item. A review of current patron-driven acquisitions models associated with interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand is included.

Nongovernmental groups, state governmental agencies, and of course, the federal government put timely, authoritative, practice-oriented reports up on the Web with great speed. This presentation will provide the rationale and procedures for adding freely available Web sites to the online catalog to augment and support curricular needs and provide some mechanisms for students to find and access the resources easily.

Return On Investment For Collaborative Collection Development: A Cost-Benefit Evaluation Of Consortia Purchasing, Denise Pan, Yem S. Fong

This paper describes the cost-benefits and the return on investment of one consortium comprised of five separately administered libraries in the University of Colorado (CU) System. With a long history of collaboration, the libraries have developed an ideal cooperative arrangement for acquiring electronic content that is accessible across all campuses. The size and flexibility of this institution-based consortium allows it to be responsive and successful in collaborating across four campuses despite different sized budgets and unique local and institutional constraints. This original research described a comparison of 50 composition topics taken from my library instruction sessions with Reference Universe versus simple keyword searching of the online catalog. Pete and I concluded that twenty-three percent of the "good" hits in Reference Universe were also found in OPAC search and that the OPAC search found fewer "good" hits overall; but also found different relevant resources.

Booklists ... librarians love them, but they also raise many questions. This session explores where today's libraries fit in the dichotomy between what we 'should read,' what we 'want to read.' Our first stop on this exploration will be the concept of a booklist. Highlights of this part of the adventure will be: testing attendee's knowledge of current booklists, a review of booklist sources, and identification of OCLC booklist highlights. A great challenge for present day libraries is to move from the thought process of being a destination location with a captive audience to positioning its services to meet the needs of its users. This paper explores the frequency of library use and satisfaction of library resources and/or services by hospitality education patrons. Using data collected with patrons (N=368) of five Hospitality Management programs across the country, the study found significant differences in library access, use, and satisfaction based on gender, academic status, and international versus non-international patrons.
