As religious congregations consider consolidation or rehoming of archives, library and archival initiatives from recent decades serve as models to chart a way forward. In the early 2000s many libraries and archives formed statewide, collaborative digitization programs to leverage the power of partnerships to provide access to high-cost digital collections software and digitization services to partner institutions with fewer resources. Abstract
Management of library collections is an inherently collaborative process. Spanning multiple generations, materials are selected that support user communities, striving for the optimization of storage and access at the lowest cost.[i] While established partnerships are crucial for the survival of libraries, within any cooperative network, there exist opportunities for divergent practices. Alternative initiatives may have progressive intentions, but competing systems and groups have the potential to disrupt recognized standards and infrastructure, some of which can prove detrimental to information organizations.

A Tribal Special Library And Archives Project: Establishing The Malki Museum Special Library And Archives, Andrea Geyer

The Malki Museum Tribal Special Library and Archives project is an on-site repository created in order to provide access to information regarding tribal culture and heritage to local tribal members and researchers. The project filled the need for a space dedicated to material related to the history of local Southern California Native American tribes and information regarding the topics of Archaeology, Anthropology and History. The collection includes: books, manuscripts, documents, audio/visual media, and photographs. Bringing together multimedia sources, the Special Tribal Library allows for the preservation and accessibility of these items through cataloging and digitizing the collection. This method allows …
