Considerations Before Implementing Mobilecirc For A Deselection Project, Jodene R. Pappas

In Fall 2014, Steen Library Administration developed a renovation project to repurpose an area for students to use, particularly graduate students. The northwest quadrant of the third floor in the library cleared for the project with materials deselected or shifted. Librarians estimated that about 105,000 volumes (15% of the stacks collection) could be deselected. Deselection is a routine task performed by libraries to create a more relevant and accessible collection for the users they serve. Library faculty use various criteria for each discipline and carefully consider each item.

Students in K-6 support becoming digital learners but many lack the digital skills needed to engage with ICTs such as eBooks. Some educators lack the technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK) to adjust instruction and meet students’ needs. This study examined the extant body of research on the use of eBooks with K-6 literacy instruction to address the perceived lack of effective evidence based practices needed to build self-efficacy. The goal: identify effective TPK regarding when, how, and why to integrate eBooks with K-6 literacy instruction. Print journal collection development has long been one of the traditional roles of academic librarians. However, in the last 20 years or so, print journal ownership has declined and online journal access has taken its place; both due to growing concerns with flat or declining budgets as well as a lack of space and the need to repurpose this limited space. Illiad, Rapid, And An Unmediated Solution To The Interlibrary Loan Textbook Dilemma, Erika Mcneil

As the cost of textbooks rises and discoverability of resources improves, students are turning more and more to interlibrary loan to meet their textbook needs. This paper describes how systems can be utilized to streamline processes and allow for the cancelling of textbook requests consistently and appropriately by taking full advantage of the capabilities of ILLiad and Rapid, saving both staff time and money. This paper looks at how a large research university made the decision to implement a textbook policy, and how it navigated the troubled waters to come to a simple, unmediated solution.

From October 24 to 26, 2016, the Canadian Linked Data Initiative (CLDI) hosted the Canadian Linked Data Summit in Montreal, Quebec with the goal to increase awareness and nurture collaboration for linked data production in Canada. The Summit was inspired by CLDI’s investment in developing and sustaining a cooperative plan for Canadian linked data development for libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural institutions across the country. Processes And Strategies For Collaboratively Purchasing Electronic Resources, Sunshine Carter, Danielle Ostendorf

Collaborative Librarianship

Academic libraries collaborate to enhance and expand library services. However, libraries may not pursue collaborative electronic resource acquisitions due to complexity and the lengthy negotiation process. Two University of Minnesota campus libraries conducted a year-long pilot project to investigate intentional and proactive cooperative e-resource acquisitions. This article discusses the key strategies, processes, and lessons learned for collaboratively purchasing content, along with recommended best practices.

Five academic libraries in Ontario (Canada) are collaborating in a shared last print copy repository project. The project, called Keep@Downsview, aims to consolidate and rationalize low-use print materials held by the partner libraries and ensure long-term preservation of these important scholarly materials in Ontario, while still providing access via document delivery and ILL. In doing so, each of the partner institutions demonstrates its commitment to the stewardship of print collections for future generations while repurposing valuable space on campus.
