Collaborative Librarianship

The Claremont Colleges Library embarked on a “learn by doing” Digital Humanities (DH) program and series of team-based projects in order to provide librarians experience working directly with DH methodologies and tools. Drawing from two divisions in the Library, a team of librarians designed an analysis project using DH tools to examine collection development trends on the topic of terrorism. In the process, the team addressed technical obstacles, communication issues and time management techniques that contributed to a productive collaboration. DH can be a catalyst for librarians’ own research beyond serving in a supportive role for the disciplines. With its …

This article recounts the literature of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when some librarians, considering the changing form of government information, questioned whether the FDLP would survive in its existing form and recommended FDLP changes that would keep depository libraries engaged as the means of accessing digital government information evolved. In the later 2000s, articles and reports included comprehensive suggestions to the GPO, by and on behalf of library associations, of ways to make depository libraries stronger partners in the FDLP. Possibly in response to these calls for reform, the GPO polled depository libraries in its 2012 FDLP Forecast …

This case study explores issues of interoperability and shared collection management between two libraries – one community and one academic – located within the American Jewish University (AJU). AJU’s choice to use two separate classification systems, Library of Congress and Elazar, respectively, provides a necessary separation of academic and religious context, but limits record access between the two collections. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following core research question: is consolidation into one classification scheme both a realistic and helpful solution for increased interoperability? Librarians and archivists have played prominent roles in initiatives aimed at preserving indigenous cultural heritage in recent decades. Such initiatives have evolved in response to the relative lack of legal protections for indigenous cultural heritage of an intangible nature, especially compared to title laws intended to regulate the use of indigenous lands, burial sites, and plants. Even non-legally binding resolutions that take a holistic approach to indigenous property have proven contentious, with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) having only been ratified in 2007, despite being drafted in 1993. This presentation describes the organization of a book drive for the Malawi College of Health Sciences in Blantyre, Malawi. The College’s library serves about 700 students, as well as healthcare professionals from a neighboring hospital. However, the library lacks sufficient resources, with most of their books being outdated or in poor condition, diminishing health care quality in Malawi.

This panel describes how the University of Dayton planned and carried out an exhibit on the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection, featuring a garden inside the library. A “Mary garden” is a garden filled with flowers named for Mary.

The panel describes the content of the collection and how the exhibit was originally conceived; the exhibit design and programming; and the challenges faced during the planning process.

The exhibit provided a way for the Libraries to promote an archival collection that not only closely connected with the University’s mission as a Catholic institution, but also provided new opportunities …

The Portland State University Library has a heavily-used course reserve service, for both print and electronic materials. When we migrated to ExLibris in 2014, we decided to move from Docutek ERes to Alma. We took the opportunity to rethink our course reserve service and changed everything from loan periods to work flows. We also harnessed Primo to make our course reserve materials more discoverable and incorporated course reserves materials in the course shells of our learning management system, Desire2Learn (D2L).

Faculty Response To Deselection In Academic Libraries: A Psycholinguistic Analysis, Ann Agee

Deselection is a necessary but politically sensitive part of an academic librarian's responsibilities. To provide an overview of the emotional dynamics involved in weeding an academic collection, this article analyzes editorials, articles, and book chapters chronicling faculty response to weeding from a psycholinguistic viewpoint. Using computer-based text analysis, these accounts are examined for the amount and type of emotional content they contain. These findings provide a template for what librarians can expect when beginning a deselection process and point to best practices for working effectively with faculty to create a robust and healthy collection.

The University of Kentucky had been on Voyager since 2001. We had built a complex fund structure using reporting funds to map funds accurately over to the University’s SAP system and provide break downs by subject and format. In addition, the Acquisitions Department Head had been relying on an access report and a code in the invoice note field to provide accurate ARL statistics. When the Libraries migrated to Alma in January 2016, it quickly became apparent that the fund structure would need substantial reworking to be functional in Alma. National statistics are collected and reported by libraries for a variety of reasons. The presenter was recently asked to report statistics about her library's collections for ARL, AAHSL, ABET, CEAL and IPEDS, each of whom ask a variety of questions about disparate data points. Her institution recently migrated from Voyager to Alma, and she found that the data is not comparable between the prior and subsequent years to this migration. This study investigates two questions key to academic library resources and services: Which sources are students most likely to use to begin their academic work? Whom do students tend to consult for research assistance? In-depth interviews conducted with 15 undergraduate and graduate students were thematically analyzed through a three-step process. The findings indicate that students are most likely to consult faculty and peers for assistance and are largely unaware of librarians' roles, while they tend to begin research using library databases and do not necessarily start with Google.
