Over the decades, this role has evolved to match the needs of the 21st century university. At Leonard H. Axe Library, the challenge has been to balance the print and electronic collections at a university whose programs do not draw enough on library resources while also creating meaningful connections with students and faculty. Sexual Minority Health: A Bibliography And Preliminary Study Of The Book Literature, Sharon A. Weiner

The literature on the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersexual (LGBT) people appears in many types of resources and disciplines. To begin to address the need for relevant, easily accessible information for LGBT people and health care providers, this study identified popular and scholarly books published in the past 10 years and analyzed topics; number of books published per year; more prolific authors; and primary publishers. The results indicated that a relatively small number of books were published (521) by a wide range of publishers/self-publishers. Most were about mental health, relationships, or family and 24% were personal accounts.

In February 2016, Charlene Maxey-Harris proposed a charge to the UNL Libraries faculty to review the local liaison program. In 2013, the Marian Library received the papers of the late John S. Stokes Jr., co-founder of Mary’s Gardens, a Philadelphia organization that taught and encouraged the planting of devotional gardens in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mother. Active in civil rights and social justice movements, he was the director of the Wellsprings Ecumenical Center in Philadelphia. He died in 2007.

Among his papers was a collection of promotional brochures from a variety of religious orders. The University of Dayton Libraries have digitized them and made many of them available in eCommons, the University’s open-access institutional repository. In observance of …

Information Behavior In The Mobile Environment: An Overview, Ziming Liu

As smartphones become ubiquitous, they increasingly influence the way in which students seek and use information. It is important to understand emerging information behavior as a result of wide spread use of smartphones. This paper provides an overview of information behavior in the mobile environment. Gender differences in mobile information seeking are discussed. People interact with mobile information in varied and unpredictable locations or while in transit. The mobility of information engagement is an important issue that human information theory should embrace.

These lesson plans began with a desire to explore notions of authority in the library classroom at our mid-sized urban university, including how authority is used by teachers to the benefit or detriment of learners and how learners can begin to reclaim their own authority. In creating these lesson plans, we sought to begin with students’ experiences, promote their sense of personal empowerment, and encourage them to consider the complexities of source evaluation.

The World Wide Web (WWW) has changed the way that we access information. Digital repositories have become the solution for preserving old materials and the venue to allow open access (OA) to the public. This research paper examined the scholarly library and information science (LIS) literature related to cultural heritage and digital preservation including publication over time, core journals, countries that were the focus of publications, and types of library or cultural repositories that are delineated herein.

Pastime With Good Company: The Songs Of Henry Viii And His Daughter Elizabeth I, Courtney E. Clark

The purpose of this study is to document the surviving musical compositions of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The repositories in London containing each monarch’s remaining body of musical work were examined and the compositions themselves studied. Research was conducted to give further details about each document and its history within the Tudor monarchs’ lives.

Folklore can be defined as “context, performance, attitude, cultural tastes, and the like” (Toelken, 1996, p.7). With folktale and fairy tales, these stories embody cultural values and morals, aiding in learning a lesson or to keep intact a cultural tradition. Many works of literature serve as models for studies in folklore, offering literary criticism, while allowing ancient traditions and modern traditions to be explored (Toelken, 1996, p. 391). Additionally, most, if not all, written folklore, folktales, and fairy tales were originally passed down verbally, from one generation to the next; these stories are part of oral histories (Toelken, 1996). Mississippi has a place in the history of library science. Although libraries appeared in the state as early as 1818 (Halsell, 1975), training for librarians was not available until 1926 at the State Teacher’s College in Hattiesburg, later renamed The University of Southern Mississippi. Southern Miss awarded its first master’s degree in library science exactly fifty years ago, in 1965.

This session will introduce CORA (Community of Online Research Assignments), a pilot open access educational resource developed for faculty and librarians in higher education. Librarians at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) received a Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC) Project Initiatives Fund grant to create an online open access repository of user contributed research and information literacy assignments targeted to SCELC institutions. California’s three public higher education systems (University of California, California State University, the California Community College System) enroll nearly 3 million undergraduate students and employ almost 100 thousand faculty. In 2012, the California State Legislature directed the three systems to create an online library of open educational resources to encourage the use of free or affordable textbooks and other materials throughout California’s public higher education system.
