Shifting Taxonomies In Home Care Nursing Information Behavior: Patients, Pandemic, Community, Richard P. Smiraglia, Edmund Pajarillo, Elizabeth Milonas, Sergey Zherebchevsky

IKOS has continued to monitor the nursing information behavior (NIB) of home care nurses. In earlier reports we described how we developed an online taxonomy of NIB. We then took on a qualitative analysis of video representations of home care nursing in the pandemic. Merging the codes from two rounds of open coding yielded a set of categories (or axes) that could be used to construct a narrative analysis. Contextual quotations from the video transcripts further reveal the intensity of the potential taxonomic extension. Libraries are actively exploring ways to use Linked Open Data (LOD) services to enhance discovery and facilitate the use of collections. Emblematica Online, which provides integrated discovery of digitized emblem books, incorporates LOD in its design. As an implementation prerequisite, the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) and Library of Congress (LC) Linked Data Service APIs were used to reconcile name and subject strings from legacy catalog records with global authoritative links from LOD resources. In the spring of 2021, the Tredway Library at Augustana College (Rock Island, IL) implemented an audit of the library's print book collection to see if there were gaps in representation of the voices of authors of differing races/ ethnicities; genders; or sexual orientations. With the results of this audit, Augustana librarians now have a better understanding of which voices and perspectives are missing and/or underrepresented in the print collection. This toolkit is intended to assist other libraries / information organizations in undertaking similar diversity audits of their own.

This presentation is inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Report and Recommendations released by the Canadian Federation of Library Associations in April 2017. With a focus on the “decolonization of library access and classification” in relation to the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) it presents the term circle as a way to mitigate colonial biases by creating a hybrid subject language system using SKOS RDF/XML in a linked data context. This hybrid system facilitates Indigenous community participation in the control and development of subject metadata and suggests a new role for metadata.

In order to increase the value and discoverability of their metadata, libraries explore options for making that data available and useful outside of the data silo of the library world through the adoption of Linked Data and Linked Open Data (LOD). OCLC Research conducted its 2018 International Linked Data Survey for Implementers. Results showed that 41% of the linked data projects/services described in 2018 were reported as using Wikidata as a source they consumed. When the William & Mary Law School Equity and Inclusion Exhibits Committee decided to begin hosting a series of physical exhibits with online components, the Wolf Law Library staff eagerly offered the scholarship repository as the best place to house the online exhibits collection. In late February, the library launched the first digital exhibit, “Black History at W&M Law.” In this talk, Linda will discuss the repository structure and format W&M chose, how different material was integrated into the collection, and give some insight into what worked and what didn’t.

During the summer of 2020, several members of the Cardozo Law Library collaborated to create a controlled vocabulary (CV) for LARC, our institutional repository. During the creation of this CV, there was no explicit intention to consider critical librarianship teachings while making decisions about what words “belonged” in the CV nor in drafting policies relating to the CV. This presentation will reflect on how beginning the project with critical librarianship in mind may have impacted the CV and will attempt to consider changes to the current policies to mitigate biases that are undoubtedly embedded in the CV as it stands.

Unprocessed collections are a barrier to access that many manuscript repositories face. Our goal is to provide at least basic access to collections that have been hidden for decades. Acknowledging that our current workflow might take as long as ten years to catch up on our backlog of unprocessed collections, BYU's Harold B. Lee Library is rethinking workflows to re-emphasize user needs as a top priority.
