The Qualitative Data Repository (QDR, www.qdr.org) is an archive dedicated to qualitative data and data underlying multi-method inquiry. QDR is the only repository of its kind in the US—dedicated specifically to curating and archiving qualitative data and attuned to the requirements and concerns of qualitative researchers, their materials and sources. Planning for QDR begun in 2007, as discussions about data sharing gained increasing salience in the social sciences. Much of the infrastructure and advice on sharing data, however, focused on quantitative data. Self-migrating assets and metadata from one digital asset management system (DAMS) to another is a large undertaking. This is particularly the case for a small academic library without IT support. At Loyola Marymount University's William H. Hannon Library, we recently self-migrated from CONTENTdm to the Adam Matthew Digital Quartex platform. Through this experience, we learned several important outcomes in assessing and processing the digital assets and metadata for the new system. Information Management

This study provides both a quantitative estimate and qualitative analysis of the additional ‘retrieval power’ that professionally assigned subject indexing affords users of a typical database in the field of education. A full version of Informit’s A+ Education database and one stripped of its subject indexing were searched by four research assistants tasked with compiling exhaustive bibliographies on forty-eight topics. The searchers were then surveyed about their use of the two databases, while their bibliographies and search logs were also examined. A two-way ANOVA model was constructed to estimate the percentage of additional resources found by the searchers on the …

This poster describes a project to develop Spaceport, a Python app that transforms EAD finding aids from ArchivesSpace into EADs for Virginia Heritage, HTML files for the JMU Libraries website, and MARCXML records for the catalog. It outlines the challenges and needs that led to Spaceport's development and describes benefits experienced from its implementation.

S&DI assessed Digital Collections when the William H. Hannon Library CONTENTdm instance became unsupported. Quartex has changed library's capability to manage digital assets, unify workflows with Archives and Special Collections, and provide patrons with a dynamic experience with a modern interface. William H. Hannon Library selected Quartex, a fully-hosted solution, because its potential to develop a Digital Collection with greater UI and UX. In addition, Quartex, unlike many systems, allows for the ingest of different types of formats, including video formats. The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Social Media Group initially created the CALA Social Media Tag Library in Fall 2017 to facilitate better navigation and search for social media channels, particularly the CALA Facebook public page and promote the organization’s programs and activities. The Social Media Group introduced the creation of the Tag Library to the CALA community in Summer 2018, but the tags were limited to member-only, internal use. Libraries are at the forefront of creating rich quality metadata to ensure communities can access, learn, and understand their shared histories. The Metadata and Monographic Resources Team (MMRT) is tasked with describing and providing access points to Clemson Libraries’ Digital Collections. Metadata decisions made by MMRT affect how community members discover, access, and use these materials. Photographic images, in particular, pose challenges if they lack descriptive information or historical context. If descriptions are provided, they often align with the historically white male majority, naming high level individuals and leaving out minority and marginalized peoples.

Winthrop University has an extensive archives and special collections that has never been cataloged. Digital Commons @ Winthrop officially launched in January 2016 and our archives staff worked diligently to add items to our repository. The question then became how can we integrate this work in to our ILS system. Altova MapForce is an intuitive graphical mapping tool for manipulating and converting any structured data, including OAI-PMH XML, into any scheme without specialized knowledge of XML or XSLT. With Altova MapForce, repository managers who lack dedicated XML programming or development support can streamline creation of XML stylesheets and simplify XML conversions. During this session, we will look specifically at crosswalking bepress journal metadata to Crossref Deposit and DOAJ Native XML.

Recommendation #5 in the CFLA-FCAB Truth & Reconciliation Report advises that libraries address the “structural biases in existing schemes of knowledge organization and information retrieval arising from colonialism.” It suggests that one way to do this is by “integrating Indigenous epistemologies into cataloguing praxis and knowledge management.” This requires conversations and collaborations, learning and unlearning. In this panel, F. Tim Knight and Sharon Farnel will discuss their paths toward understanding the inherent differences that exist between Western and indigenous approaches to knowledge, and explore what decolonization means in the context of library resource description.
