Should The New England Education Research Organization Start A Journal In The Age Of Audit Culture? Reflections On Academic Publishing, Metrics, And The New Academy, Edward Lehner, Kate Finley

A large regional educational research association can straightforwardly establish a scholarly journal associated with its annual meeting. However, this work underscores the complicated scholarly ecosystem that an association enters when publishing a journal. The social sciences’ scholarly literature exists in a related series of networks that could be described as a type of “audit culture.” Within audit culture, two major academic publishers, Elsevier and Thomson Reuters, have established competing, yet strikingly collinear, journal metrics systems: Scopus and Web of Science, respectively. These and other bibliometrics systems are used to assess, order, and rank the supposed value of a researcher’s work. …

When my colleagues in the University Libraries gathered on the west portico of Roesch Library June 9 for our own version of the Olympics, our competitive nature, mostly dormant in our daily work, emerged in events that put our teams to the test both physically and mentally: journal Jenga, journal toss, cart racing, book balancing, speed sorting and the hardest scavenger hunt I’ve ever participated in.

Open access (OA) is a form of publication that allows some level of free access to scholarly publications. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a repository to which OA journals may apply and upload content to increase discoverability. OA also refers to metadata that is freely available for harvesting. In making metadata open access, standards for schemes and protocols are needed to facilitate interoperability. For open access journals, such as those listed in the DOAJ, providing open access metadata in a form that promotes interoperability is essential for discoverability of their content. The central purpose of an institutional repository (IR) is providing open access to scholarship. That scholarship originates primarily through the work of faculty and students at research institutions, leading research libraries to embrace IRs and the scholarly communication movement. IRs typically include student theses and dissertations and faculty publications but sometimes extend far beyond to institutional records and documents. In February 2016, Charlene Maxey-Harris proposed a charge to the UNL Libraries faculty to review the local liaison program. The original charge was for the creation of a team to investigate different, new liaison models and research that will allow the Libraries to restructure the current system to develop more collaborative partnerships with research centers and departments; improve the way liaisons communicate and interact with departments, research centers, and other new campus initiatives; allow liaisons to work in their areas of strength; and find ways to assess the impact of liaison engagement and outreach. Extending The Institutional Repository To Include Undergraduate Research, Eleta Exline

While a primary strategy of scholarly communication initiatives has been to encourage faculty participation in institutional repositories (IRs), with some process and workflow customization, IR participation can be successfully extended to undergraduate students, with benefits to both the student and institution. Drawing observations from the University of New Hampshire Library's work collecting undergraduate honors theses and other student research, this article discusses customization strategies for creating an effective workflow for student self-deposit using an iterative, feedback-based approach, and the benefits, challenges,and potential concerns of encouraging undergraduate participation in institutional repositories.

So what happens when you are tasked with creating a marketing piece to pique donors’ interest? How do you know what they want to know about you, and what do they already know? Part II of the University of Central Florida Libraries hosted research lifecycle session at THATCamp Florida 2016. The Research Lifecycle at UCF presents a unified model of campus-wide support and services available to UCF researchers. This model was designed by the UCF Libraries’ Research Lifecycle Committee with inspiration from OpenWetWare’s Research Cycle. This presentation aims to explore the services and resources that UCF Libraries currently provides to researchers, while exploring how digital humanities research, specifically, can utilize such tools.

In 2013, the Marian Library received the papers of the late John S. Stokes Jr., co-founder of Mary’s Gardens, a Philadelphia organization that taught and encouraged the planting of devotional gardens in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mother. Active in civil rights and social justice movements, he was the director of the Wellsprings Ecumenical Center in Philadelphia. He died in 2007.

Among his papers was a collection of promotional brochures from a variety of religious orders. The University of Dayton Libraries have digitized them and made many of them available in eCommons, the University’s open-access institutional repository. In observance of …

Information Behavior In The Mobile Environment: An Overview, Ziming Liu

As smartphones become ubiquitous, they increasingly influence the way in which students seek and use information. It is important to understand emerging information behavior as a result of wide spread use of smartphones. This paper provides an overview of information behavior in the mobile environment. Gender differences in mobile information seeking are discussed. People interact with mobile information in varied and unpredictable locations or while in transit. The mobility of information engagement is an important issue that human information theory should embrace.

This program will present the experiment of adding linked data values to the digital collections at the University of Central Florida Libraries in its digital repository and institutional repository (IR). Working with the Digital Initiatives and some faculty members, the Metadata Librarian in Technical Services has been adding Library of Congress linked data and Virtual Internarial Authority File data to the library's collections in CONTENTdm and its Digital Commons based IR. Electronic library content must be accessible to students with disabilities, however many institutions have focused on accessibility of physical facilities without considering the requirements for online information. Western Kentucky University (WKU) developed a required, automated program to audit WKU Libraries’ electronic content including, the website and library database vendors. Additionally, WKU began requesting documentation of accessibility features in the form of a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). This presentation will focus on both our internal auditing efforts and the challenges of obtaining accurate vendor documentation.

Due to Core Curriculum Standards and the STEM and STEAM Initiative, educators are searching for innovative tools to meet the educational needs. Makerspaces offer an outstanding perspective in teaching interdisciplinary studies. A wonderful example is the Future of Music Makerspace, which introduces participants to basic musicianship. By studying music, students will learn various other disciplines while collaborating and accomplishing a common goal.

Teaching Multimedia With Free Tools, Jim Lindsey

Students love doing hands-on work with multimedia – images, audio, video and Web sites. Unfortunately, software to do such work so can be costly and difficult to install. This hands-on presentation will show participants free tools for editing images, audio, video and Web site creation as well as how to incorporate them into their computer literacy courses. Most of the tools that will be shown are Web-based; students only need an Internet connection to use them. Since the session is short, hyperlinks to tutorial videos, sample assignments and grading rubrics will be made available to participants.
