This book chapter examines two futures for academic librarians working in access (technical) services: deeper collaboration on data management with faculty and student researchers and expanded access to library resources on the Semantic Web. Both are concerned with data organization, discovery, access, and support of shared data beyond the library. The chapter examines many aspects of research data from the perspectives of researchers and librarians. University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The Technical Services and Library Systems Division of the University at Albany Libraries conducted an internal customer service survey to gauge customer satisfaction with its services. Survey results demonstrated that customer surveys are a valuable assessment tool. Technical services and library systems units should use this tool to identify whether customers are satisfied with the services provided, whether the services are still needed, whether additional services are needed, and more. This presentation provides an approach to conducting a customer service survey, an analysis of potential benefits, and a survey instrument that others could adapt to use in their own libraries.

While traditionally libraries are very good at counting (books, patrons, reference questions, etc.), the question of value can no longer be answered by quantifying things and activities. In fact, it is challenging to try to assess and assign value to the services and resources provided by libraries. Increasingly libraries are asked to communicate their value to their stakeholders more effectively by providing evidence of outcomes related to user experience and institutional mission and goals. Several library associations have recently published reports delineating the value of libraries to the constituents.

As part of its participation in the Google Books government documents scanning project, the Purdue University Libraries agreed to contribute volumes of the Congressional Serial Set (CSS). Realizing that the results would be far more useful if the individual documents within this title were cataloged separately, librarians developed procedures to create brief records and began cataloging CSS documents from the 1890s. The University of Iowa became a partner in this collaborative pilot project, and its cataloging staff used the Purdue template and procedures to create records from the CSS for individual documents from two years in the 1890s. …

This presentation describes the process of organizing, describing, and digitizing one of Santa Clara University's most important archival collections, the Mission Santa Clara manuscripts, a wide-ranging group of records, journals, correspondence and documents. The collection provides a view of the early days of colonization in the Santa Clara Valley and the growth of the mission culture.

Increasing Access To E-Books Using Qr Codes, Dana Hanford

In order to draw attention to our library's ever-increasing e-book collection, I devised a way to promote select e-books by using QR codes that link a print copy of an e-book cover image to the bibliographic record in our catalog. By using a freely available QR code generator/tracker, I'm able to create a QR code with link for each select e-book cover image. The print e-book cover image and QR code are displayed in a clear acrylic frame on our new books display shelf (please see attached image). This session is geared towards library staff who would like to increase practical knowledge about collection development and management of DVDs and streaming videos. Video selection includes identifying videos of interest, forming relationships with vendors, issues of pricing, licensing, and copyright fair use versus public performance rights. Video processing involves the steps in providing access to videos through cataloging for local consumption. This includes decisions such as genre and subject heading choices, classification decision, special interest MARC fields. We'll also speak briefly on decisions about packaging, shelving, circulation, weeding, and preservation.

eResource access problems challenge electronic resources librari- ans and frustrate users. Challenges of using library systems can include information overload, links that do not work properly, incorrect metadata, and questionable relevance to search results. Nate Hosburgh, Electronic Resources Librarian at Montana State University, gave a presentation titled “A User-Centered Approach to Addressing Issues of Discoverability and Access” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held in the Mitchell Memorial Library on August 2, 2013. Hosburgh spoke of lessons he and his team learned about troubleshooting eResources and his team’s approach to issues of discoverability and access.

The U.S. colleges and universities offering non-sectarian educational programs in Jewish Studies rely on the support of their academic libraries for research materials and library services. For college libraries which use Library of Congress Classification scheme, it is a common practice to integrate "studies" resources into their general library collections.
