Organizational change is challenging. At the heart of this challenge is an attachment to the status quo. Both employees and managers tend to prefer the status quo because it is known and, unless shown otherwise, enables them to successfully accomplish their responsibilities. They often use tradition as a way to maintain the status quo. This case study provides an example of organizational change in the Brigham Young University (BYU) Library and discusses how tradition was used to both promote and resist change.

The Metadata Justice in Oklahoma Libraries & Archives Symposium is an event focused on improving metadata and description for historically overlooked communities in library and archival collections. This event is a result of collaboration between people working in libraries and archives in an environment that has traditionally kept library and archives work separate. Two members of the 2023 Planning Team discuss the symposium’s inception, event logistics, successes, opportunities for growth, and the impact that this symposium has on the Oklahoma library and archives community.

Student Perspectives On Increasing Visibility Of Las Vegas African American History, Ericka Marielle Garces, Nicole Garcia-Contreras, Alfredo Lim

Communication Studies Student Research

Photographer Clinton Wright documented the everyday lives and experiences of the African American community in Las Vegas' Historic Westside from 1964 to 1971. He later donated his collection of photographic negatives to the Special Collections and Archives at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries. Although the collection is open to the public, physical access is limited to the Special Collections Reading Room, which may restrict usability for some researchers and community members. This project highlights the importance of digitization and metadata workflows in improving access to and visibility of archival materials.

Although public and school libraries, as well as many non-profit organizations regularly utilize volunteers, academic libraries are less likely to welcome them. This article describes the variety of volunteers received at Brown Library of Abilene Christian University and the tasks that they perform. It also presents a discussion of the motivation to accept volunteers, perhaps a faith practice.

The BYU Library's cross-divisional Digital Content Exploratory Committee examined the extant personnel, systems, and workflows allocated to the care of a wide range of digital content types stewarded by the library (examples: digitized master and access derivative files, born-digital manuscript materials, born-digital scholarly materials, web archives, data, etc.). We compared our problems, standards, and staffing structures to the field at large through a literature review and an environmental scan. Objective

This study collected and analyzed data on the required and recommended textbooks and board exam prep resources in academic health sciences libraries that serve accredited colleges of osteopathic medicine (COM) programs in the United States.

Methods

The study consisted of locating, compiling, and analyzing data on the required and recommended texts and board exam prep resources through the COM libraries’ public-facing websites.

Results

The investigators compiled the required or recommended texts and the board exam prep resources used within the COM curricula from 38 COM libraries.

Conclusion

The study results provide information for medical school administrators, especially within the …

Connecting Local Archive Data To Wikidata: Focusing On The Archives Of National Debt Redemption Movement, Jaehyuk Yun, Sam G. Oh

This study aims to enhance accessibility and data utilization of digital cultural heritage preserved by the National Debt Redemption Movement (NDRM) digital archive. The NDRM archive wants to promote the historical value of cultural heritage, but it struggles with data openness, a common problem for small local archives. In order to overcome this limitation, the research proposes using Wikidata and its SPARQL-based query service. This includes analyzing NDRM materials, the current state of the archive, and metadata elements, and then mapping these to Wikidata properties. This paper lays out the conceptual groundwork for a long-term project examining ethical issues raised when addressing the value of knowledge to a knowledge economy. The project includes a series of papers on specific topics that interrelate to the subjects of knowledge, ethics and organizations. While some of the planned articles for the project will have a practical focus, others, such as this one, will be conceptual in nature. Representing Historically Marginalized Communities In Archives: Moving Beyond Lcsh To Create More Inclusive Subject Headings, Melissa Ewing

The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) are widely used around the world in libraries and archives to add access points for users searching their collections. This can be problematic because LCSH has many embedded issues including inconsistency and complexity, the myth of neutrality that surrounds it, systemic biases, and how slow it is to change. These problems lead to poor descriptions of people, especially those who belong to historically marginalized communities. Archives can move beyond LCSH to create local thesauri, crowdsourced vocabularies, and collaborative partnerships with historically marginalized communities to create more inclusive subject headings.

As archivists increasingly concede that neutrality is impossible, we suggest that non-action is still action. It follows that to treat reasonably offensive records as any other record is to apply an interpretation that they are innocuous, unremarkable, and uncontroversial. Archivists may perceive the stakes of describing these materials as particularly high, but they lack a comprehensive set of descriptive strategies in consideration of interpretive ethics. This article investigates the visuality and built-in argumentations of the Alvin interface for digitized Swedish cultural heritage, focusing on how the platform defines a document and the effects this definition has on the accessibility and interconnectedness of documents related to lesbian and feminist histories.
