This year the focus of the Archives has been on further developing several collections and making them available on Digital Commons [DC], work that has been made possible by the expertise and creativity of Jean Bigger and her work on DC. In addition work has continued to strengthen collections in general, to build new collections, and to make the Archives more accessible to administration, students, faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as to others in Illinois, USA and the world. To that end the volunteer staff set four sets of goals for the year, which are set out below …

Archival collections come in all sizes, formats, and subjects, and it is impossible for any archival education program to cover all situations that professional archivists encounter. Proper planning is essential to processing and paramount when a collection comprises hundreds of linear feet, yet it is often difficult to develop and implement processing plans when drawing on your experience alone. This presentation details a method of conducting a pre-archival processing survey that can be useful through all processing stages, as well as some additional tips on handling archival materials.

In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the Minnesota Vikings Training Camp at Mankato, University Archives staff conducted an oral history project to document Vikings Training Camp at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Over 130 fans, community partners, Minnesota State University employees, and alumni Viking players agreed to share their Vikings Training Camp stories. We blitzed Training Camp at Mankato with an iPad on a stick and snapped up quick three-question interviews. During the 1980s, a historical turn within the discipline of anthropology fueled an ‘archival imaginary’, which encouraged scholars to enter archival spaces, study their documents, and collect the historical ‘context’ that had been missing from previous ethnographic texts. The archive, in other words, became a repository, a site for the extraction of information about a particular topic. In the historiography of Palestine, these activities have proved fruitful; new historians have mined military and state archives in ways that have illuminated the nefarious details regarding the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Compulsive hoarding is characterized by the acquisition of, and failure to discard, a large number of possessions and clutter that prevents the use of living spaces as intended, and often the items acquired are unsanitary, worthless or hazardous. (Frost, Pekareva-Kochergina & Maxner, 2011) Acquiring materials from hoarders poses significant challenges to archivists who rely in part on the retention decisions of creators and collectors.

This article describes an innovative collaboration and partnership between archivists and a faculty member to enhance teaching and learning on a college campus. For archivists, instruction is often relegated to a secondary function with well-worn show-and-tell sessions that feature collection highlights. However, in a dynamic university environment, these traditional teaching methods are not sufficient for the needs of faculty in their teaching, students in their learning, or archivists seeking broader uses for their collections.

We've Got Mail: Email Preservation At A Small, Private University, Nahali Croft

This paper discusses the obstacles and solutions to implementing an email preservation system at a small university. I reviewed five possible programs for the best fit for the situation, though only three were considered seriously for implementation. At the conclusion, I discuss why the path taken was most appropriate, which may benefit others looking to implement similar systems.

This paper is a working paper for a research project in its initial stage. Using an article by German historian Stefan Berger on the role of national archives in the creation of master historical narratives in Europe as its inspiration, I look at the same concept for postcolonial Southeast Asia. Particular attention is paid to Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Due to the colonial past of these countries, what is held in their national archives includes many records created by the former colonial administrations. This case study describes a recent exhibit of archival photographs at the University of Dayton and how it was used as a teaching tool in an undergraduate course. The exhibit, Faith, Reason, and One-Hour Processing, showcased archival photographs from the Marian Library, a special library on campus devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This article outlines how the project was developed in conjunction with a campus-wide theme, Faith and Reason, and used as a teaching tool in an interdisciplinary undergraduate course, Development of Western Culture in a Global Context (ASI 120). What’S Your Source?: The Dilemma Of Scanning Negatives Vs. Prints To Represent Images In Photography Collections, Kevin C. Miller

Recently, Pepperdine University Libraries initiated the digitization and curatorial arrangement of a large collection of negatives and prints donated by the widow of Hanson A. Williams, Jr., one of our alumni. Williams had been a photographer by trade and, after his death, his wife donated 13.86 linear feet of photographic images depicting his life at college and immediately afterwards in the Korean War. After processing the collection, we realized that we had a copious number of Williams’ original negatives in addition to multiple iterations (in some cases) of prints that he had made from these negatives.
