Viewing History From The Sky: Geo-Rectification Of An Aerial Photography Collection, Kate F. Boyd

After years of looking for funding, in 2013 USC Libraries was awarded a grant from the Gaylord & Donnelly Foundation to scan and geo-rectify the South Carolina historical aerial photographs from 1930-1980s. This presentation, given at the Digital Library Federation Forum in 2016, documents the efforts to receive funding and the process of bring these photographs online for users. Thanks to Bill Sudduth of Government Information for his efforts in continuing this process.

Sailing Into Metrics: Rethinking And Implementing Metrics And Assessment In Archives, Amy C. Schindler

In 2014, SAA and RBMS appointed joint task forces to address the challenges that archival repositories face related to metrics and assessment. The task forces are drafting proposed metrics and standards, but calls for how to implement data gathering continue. This session will share case studies on the implementation of data gathering from the ground up, metrics and assessment in instruction and reference, and identifying the best and most efficient ways to quantify resources for assessment and decision making. The Business Of Time Travel: A Case Study Examining The Processing Of The Connie Willis Papers At The University Of Northern Colorado, Emory J. Trask, Katherine Shull

The work-in-progress article explores the donation, arrangement, and description of the papers of the internationally renowned science fiction novelist and short story writer, Connie Willis, to the University of Northern Colorado. The project is ongoing at UNC, but the article provides a case study exploring the both the value of science fiction collections and the challenges presented in processing them.

The Qualitative Data Repository (QDR) provides infrastructure and guidance for the sharing and reuse of digital data used in qualitative and multi-method social inquiry. In this paper we describe some of the repository’s early experiences providing services developed specifically for the curation of qualitative research data. We focus on QDR’s efforts to address two key challenges for qualitative data sharing. The first challenge concerns constraints on data sharing in order to protect human participants and their identities and to comply with copyright laws. The second set of challenges addresses the unique characteristics of qualitative data and their relationship to the …

The first Golden Age of Mystery was the 20 year span between the two world wars, from 1919 to 1939. Even after almost a century, its writers still remain familiar names with popular titles. What these Golden Age writers and their stories shared in common were three major themes: they each had a Great Detective in charge, who was a larger-than-life character whose deductive brain solved the murder and/or mystery, a puzzle that would stump the average person. Agatha Christie had her Hercule Poirot, Dashiell Hammett had his Nick and Nora Charles and Sam Spade, and Earle Stanley Gardener had …

The purpose of this essay is to bring together disparate information on Myers’ book collecting habits. President Myers used both the objects of his collecting and the intellectual ideas they represent in the course of his presidential responsibilities. Bringing Special Collections To Life: Open-Source Tools For Digital Exhibit Creation, Andrew Welp

In 2014, Butler University Libraries received an institutional "Innovation Fund" grant to implement a large-scale digitization project to facilitate access and discovery of unique institutional holdings. Today, the Butler Digital History Initiative [digitalhistory.butlerlibraryservices.org] is comprised of several digital collections and interactive "digital exhibits" providing additional context and accessibility to archival materials to external and internal stakeholders. This program will highlight the open-source tools, procedures, and partnerships that enabled Butler University Libraries to bring their special collections to life.

Portrait Of A Collector: A View From The Shelves Of Minor Myers, Jr., Meg Miner

The purpose of this essay is to provide an analysis of the books that President Minor Myers, jr. collected and that were subsequently transferred to Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) after Myers’ death. For reasons that will be discussed below, keeping Myers’ collection in its entirety at IWU was not practical or desirable. Most of the collection was dispersed at auction and a brief discussion of that event and of the decisions about what to retain conclude this work. Going Local: Creating Unique And Special Collections In An Academic Library, Arielle Lomness

Over the past two years, the University of British Columbia–Okanagan Library has undertaken a review to update their special collections and focus on the local geographical areas and targeted populations. From this, a localized, accessible, and unique collection has emerged that can better serve the students and faculty on campus, as well as community user groups in the area. This project helped to grow the community engagement focused strategic direction of the university and increase the visibility of the library in the surrounding community through building new relationships.
