Archival collections come in all sizes, formats, and subjects, and it is impossible for any archival education program to cover all situations that professional archivists encounter. Proper planning is essential to processing and paramount when a collection comprises hundreds of linear feet, yet it is often difficult to develop and implement processing plans when drawing on your experience alone. This presentation details a method of conducting a pre-archival processing survey that can be useful through all processing stages, as well as some additional tips on handling archival materials.

University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center implemented Archivists’ Toolkit in 2009-2010 and ArchivesSpace in 2015. We continue to explore and develop procedures, policies, and uses of AS. Based primarily in University Archives accessioning and description needs, this presentation outlines some new ArchivesSpace functions we have implemented or plan to implement within the next year; previous functions available in AT, but not yet (fully) implemented in AS that we have developed short-term workarounds for; AS functions we have explored and decided not to use; and workflows developed with AT functionality that don’t work completely with AS and that may need …

We will share our success and experience of working with two repositories with a small staff at two small universities in rural Kansas. The repository serves as a Green Open Access solution to globally share. Both Pittsburg State University (PSU) and Fort Hays State University (FHSU) currently use CONTENTdm (CDM) as their primary digital repository. The Gettysburg College Dance Card Collection contains over 100 dance cards from multiple accessions and of differing sizes and materials. The collection was previously kept in small, crammed boxes; its re-housing and digitization were an evident necessity. The needs and goals of this project were two-pronged: first, establishing physical and intellectual control over the items by building custom housing and enhancing item descriptions; and second, creating a digital collection featuring samples and highlights of the dance cards.

This presentation discusses how UNLV is providing access to primary
sources that would otherwise remain in the hands of private individuals.
Through their innovative “scan and return” process, UNLV is borrowing
important historical documents, digitizing them, and then returning the
originals to the owners. The digital surrogates become available through
UNLV’s Digital Collections.
