This paper is a report of a collaborative research project that identified the competencies undergraduate history majors should have related to finding and using archival materials. The boundary-spanning collaboration involved archivists, librarians, and history faculty.

Historians have long relied upon archives as essential source material, and recent studies confirmed the continued significance of archives to research in this field. However, there is no detailed listing of the archival research competencies that college history students should attain. Archives And Preservation Technical Talk: Introduction And Legal And Copyright Issues In Archives, Ruth E. Bryan

The Association of Earth Science Editors held their annual meeting at the University of Kentucky in October 2014. They requested a technical talk on archives and preservation topics. A group of co-presenters organized by Ruth Bryan conducted a survey of the membership (results in the Introduction) and crafted 30-minute presentations on individual topics. Included in this paper is the Introduction and the Legal (property rights/donor restrictions) and Copyright (intellectual rights) presentation of the technical talk.

In the ever changing information environment we now need to acknowledge our inner curator and bring those skills to the social media efforts of our institutions. Social content curation is about collecting, organizing, and sharing information in new ways that aid our patrons; they want to follow trusted “filters” of information to save them time. The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History, University of Kentucky Libraries, contains a collection of nearly 9,000 interviews. The presenters will describe the collection, highlighting some of the major projects that may be of particular interest to library users. Oral history interviews can be a valuable source of information for both scholarly and family researchers. Learn how access to these collections is continuously improving.

Deconstructing The Critical Theory Archive At Uci: An Experiment With Eac-Cpf And Linked Open Data, Sara Renée Seltzer, Alexandra M. Bisio, Shu Liu

Journal of Western Archives

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) Libraries has begun a pilot project exploring the use of Encoded Archival Context-Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF) and linked open data to expose contextual information about holdings in UCI's Critical Theory Archive (CTA). The project team has identified a number of goals emphasizing public service, sustainability, and scalable experimentation. This work-in-progress article reports the pilot's background, scope, status through July 2014, and future plans.

In 2011, to further our community-engaged mission, UASC began to focus on working with, promoting, and assisting community archives in the greater Boston area through facilitating cross-organization collaboration and access to informational, educational, and practical resources relevant to archival procedures and best practices.
