Manuscript Finding Aids

Norman E. Mann medical realia collection is considered an artificial collection. Records indicate that Dr. and Mrs. Norman E. Mann donated the Mann medical regalia collection to the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center in April of 2001. This collection contains a wide range of objects including: medical instruments, medicine bottles, medical equipment, human remains, dental ads and ephemera, and printed material. Espe Alegria: Cultural Advisor And Voice Of The Basques In American Radio, Erin Passehl

This presentation will showcase Basque immigrant Espe Alegria (1906-1991), who spent her life preserving and promoting Basque language, culture, and identity in Boise, Idaho. Espe Alegria’s continuous work left a legacy on the American Diaspora in three areas: her work in radio broadcasting, translation and immigration services, and the arts. Espe hosted The Basque Program, a one-hour radio program that aired every week from 1955-1981. Known as the “Voice of the Basques,” Espe used her social connections to personalize the program in ways that connected with listeners in both cities and Basque-speaking sheepherders. Embedding Latin American Archives Into Library Instruction And Practice, Marisol Ramos

Being both a librarian and an archivist/curator, it is one of my jobs to find ways to embed primary sources into my library instruction. This paper discuss the ways that I have found to integrate the Latin American and Caribbean archival holdings that I manage in the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center into my library services. I will discuss briefly some of the strategies, such as digitization projects, LibGuides and Show and Tells events, that I have used to bridge my archival work with my library work to provide better services to my constituents.

Light spoke generally about the major issues facing archivists who manage born digital records and how the UCI Libraries responded when providing access to the Richard Rorty papers. She discussed the challenges, such as dealing with rapid technological change, ensure present and future accessibility of legacy files, managing privacy and copyrights, guaranteeing the authenticity and integrity of files, preventing loss and destruction, and selecting the most important material for preservation. Archiving Transgender:Affects, Logics, and the Power of Queer History examines three archives that collect transgender material in order to analyze archives as rhetorical sites where a complex interplay of language, politics, logic, and affect shape archival research. Current scholarship in rhetorical historiography has (re)turned to archives to consider the rhetorical dimensions of archives themselves and the impact these dimensions have on researchers (Kirsch and Rohan; Morris; Ferreira-Buckley). I extend and complicate this line of inquiry by focusing specifically on transgender archival practices and logics. Transgender archiving is an especially rich site for critical investigation because of the complexities of the …
