This paper discussed issues regarding cultural property, access, the effects of colonialism on the loss of cultural heritage, and the role of ethics in deciding access issues in an archival setting based on the experience working with a collection of 19th century legal documents from Puerto Rico located at the UConn Libraries' Department of Archives and Special Collections at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, Storrs, CT.
The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton

This paper proposes an archival analysis of notebooks, and their relationships to other parts of personal archives (e.g. journals or diaries). The bulk of the paper is an analysis of the historical development of a particular genre of notebooks: anthropological field notes, “chaotic accounts”, as Branislaw Manilnowski called them, based largely on observation. It provides a review of anthropologists’ own recent literature on the subject, and a short case study of a mid nineteenth century notebook of the American explorer/ethnographer Horatio Hale that serves as an example of one seed out of which anthropological field notes grew.

Just before commercialization of the Internet, corporate archives communicated with the public via museums and exhibits, books and articles, educational curricula, television, anniversary publications, and nostalgic packaged goods. By 1996, as growing numbers of companies experimented with their first Web sites, corporate archivists such as Philip F. Mooney at Coca-Cola found a new, “unparalleled opportunity for outreach.” Mooney and his colleagues at Chevron, Ford Motor, J.C. Penney, Levi Strauss, Texas Instruments, and Wells Fargo were among those contributing early content to company Web sites, such as the J.C. Penney “History Page,” with its illustrated timeline, founder’s biography,video clip, and museum/archives …

A century from now, will desegregation in Virginia be a forgotten story? If we don’t do a better job of saving our records, it could be. Currently, few records of school desegregation in Virginia are publicly available. While many priceless records of the “massive resistance” to the desegregation of Virginia education reside in the special collections of Virginia’s colleges, universities, and historical societies, the whereabouts of most of Virginia’s crucial records of desegregation are unknown. Volunteer Voices: Tennessee’S Collaborative Digitization Program, Tiffani Reneau Conner, Ken Middleton, Andy Carter, Melanie Feltner-Reichert
Collaborative Librarianship
This article provides an overview of Volunteer Voices, Tennessee’s statewide digitization program. The authors focus on the three-year Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant that provided the foundation for future growth of the digitization program. In addition to an overview of the content selection, metadata issues, software selection, digital preservation, and K-12 education emphasis of the grant project, the article includes a detailed description of the work done by the digitization and content specialists from across the state who selected and scanned items.
