A Digital Archive Of Historical Railroad Property Valuation Maps, Dean Chauvin
UCCGIA PAPERS AND PROCEEDINGS
This paper describes the creation of a digital archive of railroad property valuation maps created for a railway line operated by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad Company. The original maps were created by the railroad company in 1915 for the Interstate Commerce Commission. The Commission took data on railroad property into account in calculating passenger and freight rates. Property title schedules for parcels along the railway are provided with the maps. Linen copies of close to 3,000 original maps were donated to Archives and Special Collections, Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, University of Connecticut Libraries by the …

Four years ago, the Mass. Studies Project at UMass Boston launched a cultural heritage project that we dubbed the “Mass. Memories Road Show,” a real-world mashup of PBS’s Antiques Road Show (people bring their personal stuff to a local event for professional perusal) and the Library of Congress’ American Memory Project (digitize historic stuff and share it with the world). Our ambitious goal was – and still is! – to visit each of the 351 communities in Massachusetts, inviting residents to bring in photographs that reflect themselves and their families in that community. The article reports on the decision of Alice Walker, a Pulitzer Prize-winner and internationally known Georgia-born novelist and poet, to place her archive at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Provost Earl Lewis of Emory University states that the acquisition of the Alice Walker Archive is a major addition to the collection of the university. A brief overview is given on the literary works of Walker, which deal with the struggle for survival among southern blacks. Rudolph Byrd, professor of American studies, describes the completeness of Walker's archive.

A Multiple Case Study Analysis Of Digital Preservation Techniques Across Government, Private, And Public Service Organizations, David P. Gough

The process of record keeping has evolved through time. As our technology advances, so does our ability to manage information. We have progressed from paper-based records to new digital techniques and formats to store records. However, digital storage is not the "Holy Grail" answer to preservation and storage problems. Digital storage is confounded by multiple problems, also. Some of these problems are, but not limited to, lack of standardization and legal guidance, proprietary formats, and the fragility of the digital medium. This research examines several organizations that are deeply involved in digital preservation and tries to identify common practices and …

Winston Bridges came to the campus as an assistant professor of education in 1970. He taught primarily in the area of social foundations of education. When Dean Karen Spear departed for Colorado in June 1990, Bridges—then coordinator of the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg—accepted an appointment to serve as interim dean. Bridges continued the focus on interdisciplinary studies started by deans Lowell Davis and Karen Spear. Shortly after H. William Heller arrived in the fall of 1992, Bridges was appointed associate dean. Bridges served as the chief academic officer on campus before his retirement in 2003, returning in …
