My goal today is not to tell you precisely where the proper balance is, because that can only be worked out in democratic interplay among the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches of our governments. That process is awkward, halting, and sometimes maddening; but I continue to have great faith in the wisdom of our Founders, who perceived that checks and balances would over time prove a guarantor of our liberties. The materials in this collection document campus activities and student life at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Compiled by J. M. “Sudsy” Tschiderer—a longtime director of Student Activities—this collection includes organizational and operational records of a popular campus gathering place, the Mushroom Coffeehouse. Also known as Pot-Pourri, this student-initiated facility provided a venue for music, movies, and entertainment during the early and mid- 1970s. Margaret Horst, a resident of Tarpon Springs, gave this collection to James A. Schnur in 1997. Horst had served as secretary of the Rural Protective Association at the time of its creation in 1970. Schnur, then assistant director at the Tarpon Springs Public Library, donated the materials to the Poynter Library This collection documents how residents of a sparsely developed area fought a last ditch—and ultimately unsuccessful—battle to preserve their rural lifestyle in the frontier range of northeastern Pinellas County. Are The Digital Natives Restless? Reaching Out To The Ne(X)T Generation, Laura Botts, Lauren Kata

Outreach programs are meant to expand archival audiences beyond “traditional” users. In her 1978 article, “Education Programs: Outreach as an Administrative Function,” Elsie Freeman Freivogel argues that the archivist’s first job “is to recognize that we have many publics . . . that include, among others, teachers at all levels of the educational system; elementary, secondary school, college and university students; genealogists, avocational historians, government employees, publicists, media professionals, and the merely curious.” Because Web-based and digital projects address “many publics” in relevant and familiar ways, they are easily integrated into archival outreach activities.
