Open Access Funds: Getting A Bigger Bang For Our Bucks, Bobby Glushko, Crystal Hampson, P L. Moore, Elizabeth Yates

Many libraries offer open access publishing funds to support authors in paying article processing charges (APC) levied by some OA journals. However, there are few standard practices for managing or assessing these funds. The Open Access Working Group (OAWG) of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) was asked to investigate and articulate best practices for successful open access fund management. In spring 2015, the OAWG surveyed Canadian academic libraries with OA funds to review their criteria and collect feedback on current practices. Strategic planning documents are key sites to institutional discourse and reflect the public face of the library. This research explores the extent to which market rhetoric permeates the strategic planning documents of three Canadian academic libraries, and examines the ways in which these institutions engage in market discourse to construct their institutional identity. What are the implications of adopting a "customer service" stance? What does it mean to be “innovative”? How do "personalized services" influence ideas of choice? The image of archivists in media can sometimes seem nebulous. From descriptions of dusty, unorganized vaults and cardigan-clad gatekeepers, there appears to be many stereotypes perpetuated in media. Building upon previous research in this area, this study aims to investigate how archivists are portrayed in film. Films involving archives and archivists were selected and a content analysis of these films was conducted to address the following questions: is there an archivist in the film and how is the character portrayed? Can specific stereotypes be identified? Do archivists have their own distinct identities in films or is the archivist a non-descript …

The need to support and promote the use of geospatial data and available collections has grown at Ontario Universities in recent years. These data, along with numeric data collections, are used to enhance research and expand the skill set of students graduating from a broad array of disciplines. Providing access to these types of data collections has proven challenging, and access points available to large groups of people inside academia, in government and public domains have been made possible through online portal implementations. Respect Des Fonds D'Archives: Theory And Application, Danielle Lee-Muma

This paper examines the principle of Respect des fonds, its history and reason for becoming a dominant principle, and what its aspects mean: interpreting original order as an internal arrangement, and discussing external arrangement in the principle of provenance. Case studies (both real world examples and hypothetical examples based on real fonds and archives) will be used to discuss how the twin principles of respect des fonds, original order and provenance can be put into practice. The case studies are used to discuss what problems can arise in the application of respect des fonds.

Canadian Academic Library Support For International Faculty: Library Experience And Information Needs Of Chinese Visiting Scholars At The University Of Western Ontario, Shiyi Xie

International faculty constitute a relatively small proportion of the library user community in Canadian post-secondary institutions, but they are underserved when compared to other user groups on campus, particularly international students. The author obtained first hand information about Chinese visiting scholars at the University of Western Ontario, and in this paper she presents conclusions from her experience regarding the visiting scholars' use of libraries as well as some recommendations for serving international faculty. The author suggests that academic libraries carefully consider international faculty when planning relevant services for diverse user groups. Using A Survey Tool To Establish Preservation Priorities: Results From The Historical Folio Collection Survey At The Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, Yale University, Robin Featherstone, Sarah Burge

Objective: An item-level survey was undertaken to reveal the preservation needs of a unique collection of rare medical historical folios and oversize anatomical atlases at the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, Yale University.

Methodology: During a re-shelving project, surveyors noted detailed preservation information in a FileMakerPro database. Recorded information included: dimensions, whether a new enclosure was needed, external status (condition of boards, spine, cover), internal status (cover-to-text attachment, paper), attributes (covering material, binding type, inclusions, bookplate owner, decoration), value/damage (value, damage summary, treatment summary), and photos.

Results and Conclusions: Survey data revealed vital information for determining preservation priorities. The …

The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton

This paper proposes an archival analysis of notebooks, and their relationships to other parts of personal archives (e.g. journals or diaries). The bulk of the paper is an analysis of the historical development of a particular genre of notebooks: anthropological field notes, “chaotic accounts”, as Branislaw Manilnowski called them, based largely on observation. It provides a review of anthropologists’ own recent literature on the subject, and a short case study of a mid nineteenth century notebook of the American explorer/ethnographer Horatio Hale that serves as an example of one seed out of which anthropological field notes grew.

Popular music has long been ignored by academic music programs and their associated libraries. If we are now playing 'catch-up' with pop music, then what is the status of jazz music? At Western, surprising collections of jazz music exist, but are hidden. This presentation offers an overview of the Simmons Collection and the CKGW Radio Orchestra collection, and highlights some of the Canadian content contained therein.
