Three years ago the Society of American Archivist.s published a modest pamphlet-Thesaurus of University Terms (TUT). This thesaurus was developed at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) by Jeff Rollison and Jill Tatem, with the assistance of Ruth W. Helmuth, then university archivist, and their colleagues Fred Lautzenheiser and Bob Psuik.

Access. Conservation. Records management. Limited resources. It is not surprising to find that archivists at the University of Oxford are confronted by many of the same issues as their counterparts in the States. In some cases, the issues are intensified in a way not known in America. With records dating into the twelfth century housed often in equally ancient buildings, the management of archives at Oxford proves formidable.

Adding Electronic Records To The Archival Menagerie: Appraisal Concerns And Cautions, Michael E. Holland

Electronic records are significantly different from most of the records held in institutional archives and, thus, they must be appraised and evaluated for accessioning with different and additional factors in mind. The archival predilection for discussing electronic records only within the context of preservation issues fosters the misconception that--given optimum environmental conditions--electronic media may be considered an archival or long-term storage format. This is not a realistic assessment. Electronic media should be approached as a transitory information format in the archives. The Practicum And The Changing Face Of Archival Education: Observations And Recommendations, Frederick J. Stielow

Until the 1970s, work experience was the singular training venue for most American archivists. A protoarchivist came to the field with background education in the humanities and learned on-the-job. However effective a method for instilling institutional practices, OJT (onthe- job training) has its limits as a vehicle for professionalization. Practitioners were rarely steeped or even informed about the theories and complexities of information systems or the auxiliary sciences of history. Most archivists were constricted by the pragmatic realities of their daily work schedule; hence, they were without the time or "leisure" to theorize about their problems in an abstracted fashion. …

Rookie university archivists are ill-prepared for the responsibilities entailed in the management of an academic archives. First, there is the unique institutional setting. The unusual and varied systems of university governance make strict adherence to the paradigms for archival arrangement and description impractical at times. Second, and more vexing, is the fact that few college and university archivists are intellectually prepared. Unless the archivist is a devoted alumnus, he or she must first study the institution's history, mythology, and cultural traditions. But what of the larger academic world? On 21 December 1886, Southern editor Henry W. Grady gave a speech at New York's Delmonico's Restaurant in which he called for the South to lift itself out of its slump of poverty, backwardness, and defeatism, and make itself over into a New South. Ghosts haunt places like attics, old barns, and university libraries. They live in the minds of researchers seeking in frustration that missing document, pamphlet, or book mentioned in an earlier source. Even when the text of a document has survived in some form, researchers sometimes have gone to great lengths to find the original manuscript for the assurance that nothing more can be found there.

Moving archival material is, in most situations, a formidable task that requires weeks or months of preparation. Even in a college or university setting where optimal conditions supposedly prevail, moving material may still require weeks or months because individuals from levels of the organizational hierarchy, as well as the student body, are affected or involved. Whereas another type of archival repository might shut down for the duration of a move, a university archives (located more than likely within a library) cannot, because it serves users who want ready access to the holdings. Archivists are acutely aware of the need for a better framework and new methods to guide the selection of records with enduring value. Whether appraising the current records of government agencies, corporations, colleges or universities, or social organizations, archivists confront a gargantuan task with meager tools. Appraisal theory provides general principles based on a few broad generalizations: the distinction between primary and secondary uses for records; the need to evaluate their evidential and informational values; the notion that organizations ought to preserve a record of their significant policies, procedures, functions, and activities; and the premise that certain levels of the …

When Carroll Hart, director of the Georgia Department of Archives and History, began to formulate the idea of an archives training program at her institution in 1965, she was confronting a recurring and fundamental problem. There were few training programs for archivists in the United States, and only one course, a semester course in an undergraduate college, in the entire South. The oldest short-term training program at the National Archives in Washington, which in 1965 had just reduced its schedule from four weeks to two, could not provide a feasible training program for institutions whose personnel at all levels required …

Three years after the Society of American Archivists (SAA) held their thirtieth annual meeting in Atlanta in 1966 and three years after the establishment of the Georgia Archives Institute, twenty-one archivists gathered in Atlanta. This meeting on 25 July 1969 marked the first meeting of what would become the Society of Georgia Archivists (SGA)-the third state or regional archival group formed in the United States. The forefathers of SGA stated that its purpose was "to bring about a closer communication among people in archives, manuscripts, special libraries, and other historically oriented professions; to increase knowledge in the theories and practices …

When the Copyright Law of 1976 (Title 17, U.S. Code) was passed, archivists welcomed it as a reform that would remove the distinctions and uncertainties of common law copyright and apply the provisions of the statute equally to manuscripts and published materials. Recent developments in the courts, however, and opinions expressed in two five-year reports of the Copyright Office, have indicated that the end of common law copyright may not have led to an equal treatment of published and unpublished materials in law, even though statutory copyright now applies to both. In the last two decades much has been written defining, defending, and extolling an approach to the traditional archival goal of "identification and retention of records of enduring value" called by its supporters documentation strategy. The term itself is relatively new; nowhere, for example, does it appear in Frank Evans's 1974 "A Basic Glossary for Archivists, Manuscript Curators, and Records Managers". But the concept can be found in American archival literature as early as the writings of T.R.
