Teaching Digital History Through The University Archives: The Case Of Nebraska U: A Collaborative History, Peterson Brink, Mary Ellen Ducey, Andrew Jewell, Douglas Seefeldt

Nebraska U: A Collaborative History (http://unlhistory.unl.edu) is a collaboration between faculty and staff in Archives and Special Collections (Brink, Ducey, and Jewell) and the department of History (Seefeldt). This project engages undergraduates in archival research, historical synthesis, and digital project creation.

Nebraska U uses digital technology to provide a research framework for students exploring the way the study of history is transformed using new media publication forms. Specifically, students in Dr. Seefeldt's "Digital History" course selected a topic from the history of the University; worked with Archives staff to locate materials and thoroughly research that topic; selected items …

In this paper, I will explore the role of local peace activist and feminist, Florence Ledyard Kitchelt (1874-1961) in supporting social justice, equality, and world peace. In 1924 Kitchelt accepted a paid position with the Connecticut League of Nation’s Association (CLNA), and for nearly twenty years she served as secretary and director of the organization. Working through the CLNA she canvassed the state promoting peace education and to building support for the League of Nations and the World Court. In 1925 she traveled to Geneva to study the League of Nations and attended the Assembly. Between the wars she worked …

Abstract:

Discuss the work of the project and the importance of documenting, preserving and

making public the diverse and dissenting stories of Cold War nuclear testing in Nevada. It is the goal of the project that people directly involved with the issues on the ground as well as those who know little about the test site, its impacts and importance, will benefit from using the project materials. This presentation will provide information about the archive contents and how to access them.

The Southeastern Librarian

Genealogists and local historians are converging on libraries and information repositories in record numbers, armed with questions and determined to locate answers buried in the documentary annals of the past. This crusade is sometimes met with the same confounding and perplexing problems that challenge library genealogy and local history professionals - a proliferation of information resources, the questionable accuracy and validity of certain sources and the daunting and repetitive task of instructing end users in meaningful inquiry and research. Finding Your Genealogical Roots: Research Centers In Springfield Illinois, R Philip Reynolds

As the Capital of Illinois, Springfield is the home of a wide variety of genealogical collections. Illinois land offered as a bounty for service in the war of 1812 Stimulated early settlement. Farmers from overworked Eastern states migrated to the rich prairies of Illinois. Later immigrants from Europe reached Illinois through lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. Following the Civil War, Illinois became the starting point for many in the westward migration.

Visitors to Springfield can find records left by their ancestors whether they setled in Illinois or used it as a jumping off point to the West. Research Facilities …

The Lesbian And Gay Past: An Interpretive Battleground, Polly Thistlethwaite

The lesbian and gay past is an interpretive battleground that mainstream archives have refused to enter, assuming few risks in collecting, naming, or identifying archival collections. At the same time, libraries offer up worlds to those who work to unearth the secrets there.

The New York Public Library's 1994 "Becoming Visible" exhibit trumpeted The Arrival of lesbian and gay history to New York's cultural mainstream. The NYPL exhibit denies the library's role in secreting lesbian and gay history, and diminished the contributions of community-based archives to the exhibit.
