Scraping Bepress: Downloading Dissertations For Preservation, Stephen Zweibel

This article will describe our process developing a script to automate downloading of documents and secondary materials from our library’s BePress repository. Our objective was to collect the full archive of dissertations and associated files from our repository into a local disk for potential future applications and to build out a preservation system.

Unlike at some institutions, our students submit directly into BePress, so we did not have a separate repository of the files; and the backup of BePress content that we had access to was not in an ideal format (for example, it included “withdrawn” items and did not …

Following the trend of repurposing library space to meet modern user needs, Western University is undergoing a planned revitalization and renovation of its largest library on campus. As a result, 500,000 items will need to be shifted to other locations or off-site storage. In this session we will outline the impact of metadata work in shifting this large collection of material to a shared print preservation storage facility, in coordination with Western University’s Keep@Downsview partnership (https://downsviewkeep.org/). As a robust and growing industry, often with strong ties to communities served, there is much potential for nonprofit organizations to harness powerful and rich databases of cultural information not found in any other sector. Yet research shows that in most cases, nonprofit organizations operate on limited budgets, tight deadlines, and may see the task of properly managing records as counter-productive to the mission of the organization. This research examines the systems of recordkeeping in nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and argues that record keeping staff must be considered an essential component for a nonprofit organization to survive and thrive.

Plagiarism is regarded as an academic crime, but can affect hobbies that rely on research and information sharing such as genealogy. The issue is well-known within the genealogy community. However, information professionals who aid genealogists in their research may not know enough about the issue. How can the library field respond constructively to the issue of uncontrolled plagiarism in genealogy? While the genealogy community condemns plagiarism and offers resources to correct it, current library practices concentrate on services and not on plagiarism education in the genealogy context, concentrating more on copyright and legal problems. The Information Behaviors Of Fiction Writers: A Systematic Approach To An Understudied Information Community, Lisa Lowdermilk

Within the context of creative information communities in general, fiction writers remain a relatively understudied community. This article seeks to rectify that gap by highlighting the information behaviors of fiction writers, including the ways in which they network, as well as the processes they use when writing. In doing so, it reveals that fiction writers of all genres have many experiences in common, such as the "seed incident" that serves as the starting point when writing fiction. In addition, it examines fiction writers' impact on readers, with the implication that everyone--writers and non-writers alike--would benefit from understanding fiction writers' information …

Over eleven hundred libraries across the United States and its territories participate in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) by providing public access to free government resources. In the last decade, there has been a significant shift as many government publications are being published only electronically. At the same time, several older physical collections are being digitized and made available online. This shift has caused many FDLP libraries to weed their older physical government document collections and increase their electronic holdings.

Hashtag Marbled Monday: A Webometric Analysis Of Academic Special Collections Outreach On Instagram, Carla Fulgham

This study used webometric analysis to assess the most successful strategies for engaging Instagram users in academic special collections. Data were collected from five academic special collections Instagram accounts to analyze their activity during the month of April 2018. Data considered in the study include average number of likes per post, average number of hashtags per post, and most common hashtags and content. The results of this analysis may serve as a recommendation for best practices for academic special collections interested in, or already using Instagram as a platform, to engage students and other Instagram users in their collections.

Libraries, Authors, And Literary Estates: The Complex Case Of Rosenbach V. Sendak (2016), Patrick Roughen

This research examines a lawsuit filed by the Rosenbach Museum and Library of Philadelphia in 2016 against the Estate of Maurice Sendak (1928–2012) to determine the distribution of some of Sendak’s collection of rare books. In the lawsuit, the Rosenbach claimed the executors of the Sendak estate had withheld a portion of the rare books to which it was entitled under Sendak’s will. This paper suggests possible ways in which institutions such as libraries, archives, and museums might anticipate and address some of the ownership-related problems that arise during the acquisition and/or loss of collections of an artist or author …

Games-based learning is a new concept that is used for teaching information literacy skills, which so far has been mostly given in classrooms and is one-way. The respondents taken were all new students participating in games-based learning activities, in 2018. In the implementation of games-based learning divided into 5 posts, where each post represents one information literacy skill material. The results are as follows identification of information (3.46), access to information (3.59), using information (3.36), synthesis (3.52) and plagiarism (3.55). This article discusses about information seeking behavior of 12th grade students of SMA Negeri 26 Jakarta to pursue higher education. This article also discusses obstacles found during the process of information searching. This is a qualitative research with observation and interview as methods to collect data. The result shows that all informants conducted searching about higher education in the same way with what was stated by David Ellis (1993) started with starting, chaining, browsing, differentiating, monitoring, extracting, verifying, and ending.

This article describes the distinct of privacy and security issues that are simultaneously operant in the KMS practices. It identifies several perceptions of privacy and security issues in the company’s KMS settings. By studying the perspective, authors provide a conceptual directions to the fog of misunderstandings around privacy and security in company’s KMS settings. An exploratory sequential mixed method research design was adopted. A questionnaire survey was administered by authors personally handing to KM staff in three companies, followed by semi-structure interviews with four KM staff.
