The workshop announcement started simply enough: “Your students are using
it. You are using it. Why not get the most out of Google tools?” The workshop, called “Using Google Like a Librarian,” was for faculty and staff at Grand Valley State University. Over the past two years, librarians have been teaming up with instructional technology staff to create on-campus professional development opportunities, and this was going to be (we thought) just another workshop. And then it got popular.

Building Digital Collections Through Partnerships: Byu's Harold B. Lee Library And Internet Archive, Elizabeth Smart

Since June 2009, BYU’s Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) has worked in partnership with the Internet Archive (IA) to scan library holdings for public access in the Internet Archive’s digital library (www.archive.org). While many libraries send microfilm, monographs and serials to IA Scanning Centers for digital imaging on Scribe scanning stations, HBLL is one of very few academic libraries working with the Internet Archive in a “no-cash model” partnership. This partnership is based on an exchange of goods and services.

Reference Olympic Glory! Motivating Student Employees Through Competitive Training, Hilary Kraus

The Library Olympics included group training sessions, independent learning activities, and team challenges. Training content ranged from basic skills (finding supplies, fixing the stapler) to more complex tasks (locating library resources online, searching the catalog). Concise and specific learning objectives served as the cornerstone of each event. Within those parameters, a concerted effort was made to build humor, physical activity, and competitive energy into events.

This poster session featured graphic signage from the program, sample event materials, and feedback from participants.

Academic library patron driven acquisition (PDA) of ebooks on aggregator platforms is gaining steam. Although there are many advantages to this model, aggregated ebook content is still hampered by digital rights management (DRM). Publisher hosted ebooks are often DRM free, providing user-friendly access to ebook chapters that emulates ejournal article access. Librarians and libraries should build win-win-win partnerships with aggregators and publishers that facilitate centralized PDA on aggregator platforms which results in library ownership of purchased books on DRM-free publisher platforms. Asking For Permission: A Survey Of Copyright Workflows For Institutional Repositories, Ann Hanlon, Marisa Ramirez

An online survey of institutional repository (IR) managers identified copyright clearance trends in staffing and workflows. The majority of respondents followed a mediated deposit model, and reported that library personnel, instead of authors, engaged in copyright clearance activities for IRs. The most common “information gaps” pertained to the breadth of information in copyright directories like SHERPA/RoMEO. To fill these gaps, most respondents directly contacted publishers for permissions. Respondents typically did not share publisher responses with other IRs citing barriers such as time, expertise, staffing and the need for improved methods for sharing data with copyright directories.

This panel session reports on a professional development workshop series to prepare librarians to assume a more engaged role in the university. The goal of the program is to re-examine the librarian’s role, focusing on the liaison role as the unifying agent to cultivate engagement with users through the teaching-learning process. Attendees will complete sample activities from the workshops and will learn how this model might be adapted to their own institutional setting.

Comparison of the University of Rhode Island Libraries with peer institutions (as defined by the University's Office of Institutional Research). Data used are from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Statistical Survey from the years 2006-2009. Metrics compared are: total library expenditures, total library materials expenditures, current serials expenditures, monographs expenditures, current serial subscriptions, number of monographic volumes purchased, salaries & wages professional staff, salaries & wages support staff, professional staff (fte), support staff (fte), and total library materials resource expenditures per student FTE.

Lending libraries were not the norm in 1934 when the Carnegie Corporation of New York sent American librarian, Ralph Munn, to conduct a study of the condition of Australian libraries. In his initial survey Munn learned of the Queensland Bush Book Club, an organization of well-to-do, philanthropic women from Brisbane who had established a book lending service for settlers in the Outback. They hoped to ease the drudgery and lighten the burden faced by isolated women and their families in the rural areas. The antidote was a regular parcel of “proper” reading matter which included books, newspapers and magazines. They …
