Abstract

This paper discusses censorship and the challenges of Library services delivery in Nigeria. Librarians, through their professional associations, have long been committed to the social justice principle of free access to information. External censorship challenges to library collections threaten this principle overtly. However, censorship can also occur in libraries in various covert and often unconscious ways. This paper also raises concerns about current librarian practices and library censorship processes which can effectively censor library collections from within. Comparison of the University of Rhode Island Libraries with peer institutions (as defined by the University's Office of Institutional Research). Data used are from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Statistical Survey from the years 2008-2012. Metrics compared are: total library expenditures, total library materials expenditures, ongoing resource purchases, one-time resource purchases, salaries & wages professional staff, salaries & wages support staff, professional staff (fte), support staff (fte), student headcount, total library expenditures per student, and total library materials expenditures per student.

The Wayne State University Press Journals program comprises ten scholarly print serials. When the Press sought to deliver its journals electronically, in-house, for the first time, it established a mutually beneficial collaboration with the Libraries to host, format, manage and preserve its content online. This chapter represents a case study of this collaboration, documenting the program, the process, and the unique features of this partnership.

The study gives an insight into awareness and use of lobbying and advocacy as strategic approach for improving library and information services in Nigeria with special reference to libraries in Imo state. A well-structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection with a sample size of forty (40). The study reveals that librarians in Imo state are aware of the place of lobbying and advocacy in improvement of library and information services. Our vision for the DeWitt Wallace Library of 2020 is to expand and build up our current vibrant and active space for engaging scholars. We want a library that contributes to the transformative experience for all students as well as a space that will attract faculty to utilize our space, resources, and expertise for collaborating on digital projects.
