“To Support The Southern Medical Public”: The Medical College Of Georgia As A Southern Information Agency, 1828–1861, Brenton Stewart

Faculty Publications

A traditional perspective situates nineteenth-century southern academic library culture as a late nineteenth-century phenomenon. This article challenges that assertion and traditional beliefs about the South's indifference to cultural advancement by examining the print culture of one of the South's leading educational institutions, the Medical College of Georgia. An antebellum information agency, the Medical College of Georgia leveraged its medical library, museum, and journal to transform medical information production, dissemination, and consumption in the South and represents an important symbol of southern modernity. This article presents a distinct analysis of early nineteenth-century southern medicoscientific information culture.

Bird’S Eye View: Using Twitter In #Clubroesch, Katy Kelly, Hector Escobar

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

For many libraries, social media is usually another platform to share information about library resources and events. For some, the term has become overused so much that the social aspect has fallen by the wayside. Facebook page updates or tweets are only part of what you can bring to and achieve from social media.

In this article we discuss how students communicate with our academic library on Twitter, and how we used conversations to improve library spaces, technology, and services. We will explain the process of tracking and responding to student tweets, as well as the pros and cons of …

United Kingdom Libraries During World War Ii, Matthew Leavitt Mlis

Cultural attacks, especially attacks on books, have been common place during conflict throughout history (Stubbings, 1993). Libraries in particular have been targeted since books and libraries are symbols of cultures (Valencia, 2002). Nazi Germany was not an exception to attacks on culture before and during World War II (Figure 1). A total war had begun under the Nazis which meant that no area of society was exempt from attack (Valencia, 2002).

After The Book: Information Services For The 21st Century, Chuck Hodgin Jul 2015

After The Book: Information Services For The 21st Century, Chuck Hodgin

Library Faculty Scholarship

Both inside and outside of the library, the use of print information objects declines while the use of electronic information objects escalates. This phenomenon and how libraries respond to it should be the chief concerns of librarians going forward, according to author George Stachokas. Stachokas argues that nearly everything about the practice of current librarianship is rooted in "the print era" and is therefore "intrinsically linked to the physical library" (35). Given that society "increasingly abandons print" (1), librarians face the daunting task of reshaping themselves and their profession; otherwise, they "risk the problem of seeming and becoming obsolete" (36). …

Online Bibliographies For Shared Discovery, Jessica Schomberg

Library Services Publications

A few years ago, I began investigating best practices in cataloging assessment. I started with a review of related literature to gather citations on the topic. As this work progressed, I found that researchers describe assessment, or pieces of assessment, using many different terms including evaluation, quality, workflow, cost, and production. They also write specifically about cataloging or broadly about technical services; of which cataloging or metadata is a part.

Go Team! Using Teams To Manage Electronic Resources, Rebecca A. Nous, Wendy L. West May 2015

Go Team! Using Teams To Manage Electronic Resources, Rebecca A. Nous, Wendy L. West

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The increasing prevalence of electronic journals in library collections has impacted many aspects of library operations. Libraries have had to rethink workflows, processes, staffing needs, and other factors to account for the differences between print and online journals. The management of electronic journals can often cross departmental boundaries and bring into question current workflow. To address the changing landscape of electronic journal management, the University at Albany University Libraries developed two teams: one to implement batchloading electronic journal records and a second to address ongoing management and related policies. As a result of using a team approach for these responsibilities, …
