This essay is an effort to reflect on the theoretical underpinnings and implications of both our three-month process and its product. In particular, we would like to consider how our digital book both publishes an archive and allows authors and readers to “perform archive” or enact “liveness” with the materials therein. This article looks at the varying definitions and usage of the term ‘crowdsourcing,’ including those that insist the term may only be applied to online activities. An argument is made that, semantics aside, the activities known as crowdsourcing, collaboration, and/or citizen science, were in use long before the current online medium was invented and should be recognized not for the terminology employed but for the mutual benefits reaped. The article addresses the strengths of such activities, including user engagement, the accomplishment of tasks otherwise not possible because of budget cuts, and diversity of viewpoint. This paper examines two Digital Asset Management Systems (DAMS) to determine their suitability to provide access to digital photographic surrogates from a library’s archival photographic collection. The two DAMS examined are OCLC’s CONTENTdm (CDM) and Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s (III) Content Pro (CP). While both have been widely adopted, a literature review reveals that very little has been written about CP compared to CDM. Both use metadata schemes that are interoperable, reusable, and extensible and it is determined that both CDM and CP’s DAMS’ attributes recommend them. This study describes the efforts of an educator to both engage and enlighten his local community regarding the importance of preserving primary resources, and a brief community history highlighting its origin. Finally, this study offers a narrative regarding a community’s collaborative effort to re-discover and reclaim its identity.

At the University of Louisville a merger of archives and special collections had been discussed for decades, but for a variety of reasons, always dismissed. There were practical reasons in favor of it, but there were some significant internal barriers that made it easier to keep things as they were. But in 2012 things changed. Heightened appreciation for the traditional and emerging roles of special collections in university libraries, institutional budget concerns, key retirements and gradual replacement of people resistant to change, and an inclusive approach to planning, all aligned to make the merger seem like a natural progression for …
