The Role Of Libraries In The Fight Against Corruption, Ganiyu Idowu Buhari, Rotimi Adesina Egunjobi Dr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Corruption is simply a misuse of entrusted authority for personal benefit of self, family, friends and those who by rules do not deserve or qualify to get the benefit of that authority. The phenomenon which has been described as a universal one, presents itself in different forms like embezzlement, bribery, nepotism in public sector recruitment, promotion and access to public service, cronyism, vote-buying, political patronage, and judicial corruption. The effects of this phenomenon on the society are so monumental that a common platformmust be found to wage war against it, if our country’s plan for economic growth and development must …

User Authentication In A Changing Vendor Landscape - Part Two, Tom Tran, Lisa Baures
User Authentication In A Changing Vendor Landscape - Part Two, Tom Tran, Lisa Baures
Library Services Publications
With implementation of Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), the deployment of the SAML protocol improves security, facilitates the enforcement of security policies, improves user experience, and reduces password fatigue. By using a single set of credentials to authenticate, students, faculty and staff now access resources and services with a single sign-on (SSO). This results in some issues associated with IP validation and EZproxy being resolved, but not all. Therefore, presentation identified what has changed, what has not changed, and what are the new challenges to providing access. As in our presentation last year, for illustrative purposes business databases served as a …

ETSU Faculty Works
Introduction: In the aftermath of COVID-19, libraries faced the challenge of reengaging students and rebuilding disrupted outreach efforts. At East Tennessee State University’s Sherrod Library, librarians recognized the need to rebuild, innovate, and restructure our approach to student outreach. This presentation will explore how ETSU reference and instruction librarians revamped existing strategies to foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for students by redesigning our student orientation process, by developing several casual student-centered clubs, and by opening a new reference desk for drop-in research help. This presentation will provide insights and practical takeaways for libraries looking to revitalize their student outreach programs …

Unlocking Educational Potential: The Free Lgas Rubric For Transforming Library Guides Into Pedagogical Powerhouses--A Replicable Model For Universities, Sarah H. Moukhliss
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
Sarah Moukhliss, a librarian with a background in K-12 library curriculum, instructional design, and pedagogy noted that there was a gap in standards when designing student-centric library guides at her university. Although there are vetted standards for online course design, there are a less structured roadmap for designing library guides with pedagogical value. Moukhliss remixed the SUNY Online Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR) to become the Library Guide Assessment Standards for Quality Checked Review (LGAS). The LGAS was announced in the American Libraries Newsletter, ALA Direct, through the ALA website, and referenced in the ACRL Instruction Section, Fall 2024. You …

Although libraries are facing a substantial increase in book challenges that disproportionately target queer books, many librarians have had limited opportunities for professional development in understanding queer representation in library collections. In this workshop, participants will use the Rainbow Representation Rubric to analyze queer narratives and identities in brief example texts (book reviews and picture books). The presenters will guide participants in discussions that prepare them to support their communities by developing collections that capture the true diversity of queer experiences.

Rupert Raj’S Written Acts Of Activism And Care Throughout The 1980s And 1990s, Mia Jakobsen
Amplify: A Journal of Writing-as-Activism
In researching acts of activism and care in Canadian queer and trans racialized history, I examined how Rupert Raj advocated and cared for other trans individuals through his writing in the 1980s and 1990s. He noticed that there were few publications for trans individuals so he created easily accessible methods to share vital information regarding research and support that would have otherwise been difficult to acquire. Raj’s writings shared vital transgender research, literature, and expertise from across the globe. He provided critical support to and for other trans men through his easily accessible publications and letters, serving as an information …

Critical visual literacy (CVL) is the ability to evaluate and deconstruct the sociocultural contexts in which visuals are produced and viewed, and is a core skill for students to develop. This poster will present prominent definitions of CVL, compared against the results of a research study in which undergraduate students critically analyzed a children’s picture book and developed their own definition of CVL. Associated research and instructional methods will be discussed. Attendees will learn about CVL as an interdisciplinary concept and will be encouraged to adapt the authors’ methods to advance their own understanding of and teaching with CVL.

Evidence Synthesis And Graduate Researchers: Benefits And Barriers, Corinne Bishop, Sarah Norris, Jason D. Phillips
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Detailed Description:
With the increased interest in evidence synthesis research in social sciences and fields outside of the health sciences, more librarians are actively involved in consulting and collaborating with researchers, with some also participating as co-authors on projects (Chapman, 2021; Kogut, Ramirez, & Foster, 2022). Based on individual requests, librarians may conduct comprehensives searches, document and report searches to ensure reproducibility, and/or assist with question refinement, protocol development, citation management tools, and evidence synthesis software.
To support evidence synthesis researchers, libraries are identifying support models and deciding on the scope of assistance they can provide. Within this process, …
