Syntax-Enhanced Boundary-Aware Named Entity Recognition Model, Chuanming Yu, Bin Deng, Zhengang Zhang

Journal of Scientific Information Research

[Purpose/significance] This study addresses the issue of inadequate perception of entity boundaries in traditional character-level modeling-based named entity recognition models by integrating syntax information containing entity boundary features into the task using a multi-head graph attention network with dense connections. This integration enhances the effectiveness of named entity recognition.

[Method/process] This study proposes a Syntax-enhanced Boundary-aware Named Entity Recognition Model (SynBNER), which utilizes BERT for text semantic representation and integrates syntax information using a dense-connected graph attention network. This integration incorporates implicit entity boundary information from syntax information into word representations, thereby enhancing the model's entity boundary perception capability.

An Exploration Of Students' Recollections After An Asynchronous, On-Site Academic Library Tour, Adrienne Warner

Once an integral component to library instruction programs, tours of academic library spaces are less common despite students’ continued need for study spaces with various qualities. This study asks, "What do students remember after taking an asynchronous, on-site academic library tour?" Qualitative analysis finds that, while students value library study spaces, they also report predominantly positive feelings about the library and the tour itself. This research suggests that technical affordances can mitigate some historical drawbacks of tours while offering students a valuable library instruction experience.

Wikidata Workflows: With Orcid And Openrefine - A Binghamton University Case Study, Sasha Frizzell

This lightning talk will provide an overview of the process Binghamton University Libraries has been using to transform faculty information from ORCID profiles into updates in Wikidata. Our pilot project began in January 2024 to support integratation of linked data workflows into cataloging efforts, diversify authority work, and improve the visibility of institutional research output in open knowledge ecosystems. This talk will discusses the process of collecting ORCID profile information via API, cleaning and mapping data in Open Refine, and proposed expansions of the workflow in future iterations. [Purpose/significance] Starting from the related concepts of disciplinary topic evolution, this study comprehensively examines the forms and methods of disciplinary topic evolution. It identifies problems with existing concepts and shortcomings in current methods, and suggests directions for improvement, providing a reference for future research in this area.

[Method/process] Using a systematic review method, the literature on disciplinary topic evolution from the CNKI and Web of Science, as well as other academic platforms, was analyzed. This study aimed to evaluate students' perceptions of the reliability of generative AI tools in academic work, with a particular focus on the accuracy of citations produced by ChatGPT and the frequency of citation hallucinations. The study consisted of two instruments: a feedback survey and an assignment worksheet. The study was completed over the 2024- 2025 academic year and was administered to students enrolled in a for-credit information literacy course offered by the Florida Institute of Technology’s Evans Library. It gathered survey responses from 156 students and received assignment worksheet submissions from 188 students. These submissions yielded 512 AI-generated citations …

This article explores the importance of incorporating diverse rural short stories into English language arts (ELA) curricula to foster empathy, understanding, and connection among students. It addresses underrepresentation and lack of variety in rural stories within publishing and traditional curricula, which affects rural students’ sense of identity and belonging. Through exploration of rural short story anthologies, the authors highlight the significance of counterstories that depict the intersectional dimensions of rural life, including geography, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and abilities. By amplifying contemporary rural voices and complicating stereotypes, educators can create more inclusive learning environments that validate diverse experiences.

A Comprehensive Study Of Library-Led Textbook Affordability Initiatives In The United States, Mitchell Scott, Rachel E. Scott

This study presents findings from a survey and interviews investigating library-led textbook affordability initiatives in the United States. The results document diverse considerations and divergences in workflows, challenges librarians face in establishing and maintaining textbook affordability programs, and the intersection of these initiatives with library and institutional strategies. Findings suggest that these programs have grown in number and scale over the past few years, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, and are sustained—even without permanent, designated funding—due to consistently positive perceptions about their impact on student success, just-in-time delivery, and alignment with library and institutional goals.

A strength of US charter schools is their opportunity to carve out an educational niche. Without the same regulation and district control present in traditional public schools, a charter school’s approach can seriously impact how the school addresses information literacy. In our current culture, we are saturated with media and technology, and students learn about navigating, evaluating, and using information responsibly and creatively at school. However, there is currently no published research on how charters do this critical work with their students, particularly with fewer libraries and librarians in the sector. "I Don't Think Librarians Can Save Us": The Material Conditions Of Information Literacy Instruction In The Misinformation Age, Amber Willenborg, Robert Detmering

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This national qualitative study investigates academic librarians’ instructional experiences, views, and challenges regarding the widespread problem of misinformation. Findings from phenomenological interviews reveal a tension between librarians’ professional, moral, and civic obligation to address misinformation and the actual material conditions of information literacy instruction, which influence and often constrain librarians’ pedagogical and institutional roles. The authors call for greater professional reflection on current information literacy models that focus on achieving ambitious educational goals but which may be unsuitable for addressing the larger social and political crisis of misinformation.

Cataloging special collections materials requires specialized training that is not always readily available to catalogers. This presentation will explain the workflows and resources used by three different librarians to catalog materials with unique challenges: community cookbooks, government documents, and archival scrapbooks. Participants will gain the knowledge and confidence to catalog niche material types as this presentation introduces specialized MARC fields, databases, websites, controlled vocabularies, and descriptive standards to use as part of their cataloging toolkit.
