Writer-Librarian Viewpoint: Ai’S Foreseeable Impact On Literature, Zhe Benedict Yeo

In 1982, Roald Dahl wrote a short story about a supercomputer which solves the world's big factual questions in seconds. Next, they used it generate stories and changed the literature scene forever.
Is ChatGPT the cusp of this change?

Benedict, as both a fiction writer and librarian, discusses AI's foreseeable impact on authorship and literature, its applications for writing, and possible implication on classification, credits, and collection with regard to literature, especially fiction.
This presentation features insights from interviews with four writers, talks about the strike by the Writers Guild of America, and about the citing and crediting of AI-generated …

A Research Data Services Fairytale, Kathleen H. Flynn, Emily Kilcer

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Whether for assignments or research, the faculty, staff, and students at all academic institutions will work with data. Some patrons seek assistance finding open data for their projects, while others would like lessons in data analysis or visualization. Data sharing is increasingly required by journals or funding agencies, and researchers may find this challenging while also navigating Data Use Agreements, confidentiality concerns, data documentation, locating a suitable repository, and more.

Furthermore, most funding agencies require a data management plan be included in grant proposals to ensure that researchers are prepared to follow best practices regarding the collection, storage, security, and …

Responsible Practices For Responsible Libraries: The Role Of Libraries In A World Of Generative Ai, Samantha Seah

Research Collection Library

This presentation focuses on generative AI images and potential information literacy and ethical issues relating to the use and creation of AI images. Generative AI technology has made the creation and modification of images easier and more accessible to a layperson. However images are often overlooked in information literacy programmes despite growing evidence that people consume most information through visual and video formats thanks to the rise of social media platforms like TikTok. This presentation will consider ACRL’s framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, whereby in looking at information creation as a process, we need to not only look …

Ask The Better Question: Using Bigfoot To Introduce Constructive Approaches To Authority, Kate Wimer May 2023

Ask The Better Question: Using Bigfoot To Introduce Constructive Approaches To Authority, Kate Wimer

Faculty Publications - George Fox University Library

Librarians know that authority is constructed and contextual, but getting our students there can feel as elusive as Sasquatch himself. Our Bigfoot-themed classroom activity pursues a strengths-based approach, challenging increasing incredulity for new information and checklist research mentalities among our undergraduates. It asks students to ignore the good source/bad source dichotomy in favor of the question, "What can I learn from this source?". This session will explain how we started with the BEAM rhetorical framework, showcase our materials and method, and discuss our love of Bigfoot as an accessible topic for students learning to challenge their existing mindsets.

Participants will: …

Peer Review Validation: Tracking Scholarly Activity In A Repository, Amanda Schwartz May 2023

Peer Review Validation: Tracking Scholarly Activity In A Repository, Amanda Schwartz

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Providence’s institutional repository Digital Commons launched in 2018, serving as the enterprise’s scholarly activity repository. After several years of successful repository usage and readership tracking, research administration initiated a new request: peer review tracking. The repository previously tracked number of article submissions but did not assess if content was published in peer reviewed journals. How can we retroactively and proactively track peer reviewed articles on our institutional repository? Simple ask, complicated answer.

Library staff had no previous practices in place to record whether content was peer reviewed or not. The initial request seemed simple, yetbecame increasingly complex to create both …

Individual Research Consultations And Undergraduate Social Work Students: Understanding Feelings, Thoughts, And Actions During The Information Search Process, Patrick Leeport

Education Doctorate Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to build an understanding of the impact of individual research consultations (IRCs) on upper-level undergraduate social work students’ feelings, thoughts, and actions during the information search process. The purpose and research questions of this study were guided by Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process framework (Kuhlthau, 2004). Seven student participants were sampled from a social work research seminar course at a regional university in northern Minnesota. The information search processes of participants were recorded before and after an IRC with a liaison librarian, using screencast videography (SCV) methods.
