Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Access is the primary concern of a library thus information retrieval tool like an abstract is as important as the Online Public Access Catalog. Abstracting then plays an important role in improving access to information that is needed by library users. Librarians then perform this task primarily to guide the users in deciding whether an information resource will be consulted or not. The study utilized the descriptive method of research using a survey questionnaire to determine the level of knowledge and practices on the parts and types of abstracts and the challenges on abstracts a document surrogate encountered by library …

The prevalence of diabetes apparently increases all over the world. Thus, significant research works have been carried out in all aspects of the disease to control and mitigate its effects. Many researchers looked to the disease as a biomedical control engineering problem where the main task is identifying the model that can be used to mimic the healthy person's metabolism and therefore relieving the lives of millions of diabetics. This work aims to explore the dynamics of the produced scientific research in the area of diabetes modeling and control from a bibliometric method. The Centrality Of Disclosure Decisions To The Illness Experience For Youth With Chronic Conditions: A Qualitative Study, Roberta Lynn Woodgate, Pauline Tennent, Sarah C. Barriage, Nicole Legras
Information Science Faculty Publications
The aim of this paper is to illuminate findings of disclosure experiences for youth living with chronic illness using a non-categorical approach. The findings were derived from a larger qualitative study framed by social constructivist grounded theory that sought to understand youth's involvement in healthcare decision-making in the context of chronic illness. Fifty-four youth participated in the study, ranging from 9 to 24 years. Three main themes representing the youth's perspectives and experiences of disclosing chronic illness were identified: (1) disclosure is central to the illness experience; (2) spectrum of disclosure; and (3) navigating others' reactions to disclosure. The findings …

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
Academic libraries aren’t the only institutions that care for archival materials. These unique items can often be found in public libraries, historical societies, and other cultural heritage organizations, many of which may not have trained special collections catalogers on staff. In this workshop, participants will learn how to catalog archival materials, including manuscripts, photographs, and audiovisual materials, so they can be discovered in online catalogs and databases. Both item and collection-level cataloging will be discussed, and participants will learn when and how to apply relevant metadata standards like RDA and DACS. They will then practice cataloging with examples provided by …

Creating Space For Youth Voice: Implications Of Youth Disclosure Experiences For Youth-Centered Research, Roberta Lynn Woodgate, Pauline Tennent, Sarah C. Barriage
Information Science Faculty Publications
This paper examines youth’s disclosure experiences within the context of chronic illness, drawing on examples from IN•GAUGE, an on-going research program led by Dr. Roberta L. Woodgate. Youth’s descriptions of their disclosure experiences provide valuable insights into the ways in which they use their voice in everyday life. This examination of the disclosure experiences of youth offers a lens through which the concept of youth voice in the research process can be understood and youth’s agency foregrounded. We present implications for researchers, ethics boards, funding agencies, and others who engage in youth-centered research, and offer alternative terminology to use in …
Academic Libraries As Enablers To Prepare Graduate Students For Open Scholarship, Adrian K. Ho
Academic Libraries As Enablers To Prepare Graduate Students For Open Scholarship, Adrian K. Ho
Library Presentations
A plethora of digital tools have become available in the past decade to facilitate different tasks in the scholarly communication process. Meanwhile, research funders have established policies that require grant recipients to practice open scholarship by sharing their research deliverables online. Graduate students as junior scholars may feel overwhelmed due to their unfamiliarity with some digital tools and how to be in compliance with research funders’ requirements. To prepare them for academic success and open scholarship, academic libraries have partnered with graduate schools to educate students about scholarly communication issues.
With the focus on a public university in the U.S., …

Streamlining The Format Review Process: Best Practices And Lessons Learned, Kerri Bottorff, Padmini Coopamah Waldron Dr., Amanda Ammirati
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Honors undergraduate theses are modeled after Master's theses, and formatting review is an important part of the process. The Office of Honors Research (OHR) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) has, in the last two years, worked with the UCF Libraries to streamline the format review process in its Honors Undergraduate Thesis (HUT) program by making use of Digital Commons, the online platform used for the publication of theses and dissertations. Format review was previously done in person, then via email. Since Digital Commons was originally developed for journal article submission, it allows for submission of manuscripts, the return …

- Use constraints to unleash creativity.
- Use concrete resources to stimulate thinking.
- Sequence activities to achieve desired outcomes.
The Development, Design, And Implementation Of A Library Assessment Framework, Holt Zaugg
The Development, Design, And Implementation Of A Library Assessment Framework, Holt Zaugg
Faculty Publications
Common in the language and actions of libraries is the desire to develop and foster a culture of assessment and evaluation. However, most employees in a library have had limited or no experience in designing, conducting, analyzing, and disseminating library assessments. Those who do have experience tend to draw from their personal discipline background that emphasizes one type of method over another. Typically, when these assessments happen, the efforts are one-off or siloed assessments. To create and foster a culture of assessment a framework is needed to guide and support all library assessments. A library assessment framework helps library employees …

Using The Harvesting Method To Submit Etds Into Proquest: A Case Study Of A Lesser-Known Approach, Marielle Veve
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
The following case study describes an academic library’s recent experience implementing the harvesting method to submit electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) into the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global database (PQDT). In this lesser-known approach, ETDs are deposited first in the institutional repository (IR), where they get processed, to be later harvested for free by ProQuest through the IR’s Open Archives Initiative (OAI) feed. The method provides a series of advantages over some of the alternative methods, including students’ choice to opt-in or out from ProQuest, better control over the embargo restrictions, and more customization power without having to rely on …

As the American and European educational landscape progressed toward the end of the 19th century, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began to recognize that proselyting missionaries who “were taken from the plow, the anvil, the shoemaker’s shop and carpenter’s bench” would need general education in order to “keep pace ... with the rest of the world.” To address this emerging need, a training program was developed at Brigham Young Academy in Provo, Utah, to prepare Church members for missionary service through general education and courses on church doctrine. Many of the other …
