While much has changed since the last Five-Year Review of the Libraries of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, many issues and trends have remained the same. The recent pandemic crisis has required the Libraries and its staff to shift many of its activities to an online and remote model, something that was already incrementally occurring. The continuing and precipitous decline in overall budget and staff size is no longer "unprecedented" as stated in the previous review but has become the status quo. Since the last review in 2015, the Thomas Jefferson Library has seen a greater decline in staff numbers. …

No Textbook Cost General Education Pathway: An Effort To Increase Retention At Central Washington University, Maura Valentino, Geri Hopkins

Purpose

This study aims to describe a project that aims to give students a choice to complete their general education requirements without purchasing a textbook.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 26 faculty, teaching in the new general education curriculum, at Central Washington University were given stipends to eliminate expensive textbooks and use free to the student resources such as open educational resources (OER) or library resources. The data was collected on student savings and student and faculty satisfaction with the program.

Findings

Many paths were created through the general education curriculum, so a student may easily finish these requirements without purchasing a …

The data quality of commercial business and financial databases greatly affects research quality and reliability. The presence of data quality problems can not only distort research results, destroy a research effort but also seriously damage management decisions based upon such research. Although library literature rarely discusses data quality problems, business literature reports a wide range of data quality issues, many of which have been systematically tested with statistical methods. (First paragraph) Afterlives of Indigenous Archives takes its title from Anishinaabe author Gerald Vizenor who is, in turn, repurposing a quote from French theorist Jacques Derrida who, in his 1995 work, Archive Fever, referred to the archive as that which gestures toward “an excess of life,” something that “resists annihilation” (183). This excess, or “afterlife,” of the archive remains, for Vizenor at least, an unexpected location of Indigenous survivance—a site from which, despite every violent attempt to colonially contain and collapse Native presence, it is still possible to carry something forward from the ruins of representation. During the Coronavirus Pandemic, the situation of libraries and the services they are offering have changed. The shifting from the physical world to the digital environment was disturbing for many developed libraries around the world. However, this switch created many complications specifically for developing countries that are suffering not only from the lack of infrastructures and materials, but also with high illiteracy rate. This article discusses the situation of literacy and the role of libraries and librarians in Morocco, shedding lights on the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic and actions done to overcome these circumstances.

Seeking And Finding Research Collaborators: An Exploratory Study Of Librarian Motivations, Strategies, And Success Rates, Ngoc-Yen Tran, Emily Chan

Library and information science research is increasingly conducted in collaboration; a phenomenon that has been observed, but there is a lack of clarity on the factors that motivate librarians to seek research collaborators. This exploratory study presents librarians’ motivations, strategies, and their relative success rates for finding collaborations. Survey results indicate that the most prevalent motivators for seeking a collaborator were to acquire expertise that one lacked, sustain research interest, and obtain a sounding board. Workplaces, being open to collaborations, and attending conferences and meetings were the top selected strategies for finding research collaborators with the highest relative success rates.

“It's Hard To See How These Would Be Harmful To Kids”: Public Library Staff Perceptions Of Child Development And Drag Queen Storytimes, Sarah Barriage, Vanessa Kitzie, Diana Floegel, Shannon M. Oltmann

This paper reports preliminary results of a survey of 458 US public library staff members regarding their perceptions of drag queen storytimes (DQS) and the ways in which these storytimes influence child development. The majority of respondents from libraries that have hosted at least one DQS agreed that DQS support healthy child development and positively influence children’s understanding of gender and/or sexuality, while respondents from libraries that have not hosted DQS were more likely to disagree or report being undecided. Specific ways in which respondents perceive DQS to influence child development are also analyzed.
