The usability and long-term preservation of digital humanities projects, such as a digital archive or other project built around digitized materials, depend on thoughtful and thorough metadata creation. The variety of expertise required to create high-quality metadata for digital humanities projects practically requires a collaborative approach. Putting the call for collaboration into practice requires tools that are accessible and functional for all collaborators. Research on tools for metadata creation has tended to focus either on tools for librarians to manage digital project metadata or on tools for independent author metadata creation (Greenberg, 2003; Crystal & Greenberg, 2005). Zombie Tag was put together by the author with assistance from the Library’s outreach / activity committee, Zeineb Yousif (Digital Initiatives Librarian), and Kristen Borysewicz (Information Literacy Coordinator). This is an event that can be run after hours or later in the evening with a soft close, letting others know the building will be noisy. It indirectly introduces information literacy by having students find physical “resources” (cards such as housing, food, weapons, etc.) given to them by a librarian. Actions Speak Louder Than Resumes: How Performance-Based Interviews Facilitate Hiring The Best Library Candidates, Rebecca Tolley, Wendy Doucette

This case study describes an academic library search committee's decision-making, practice, and assessment of using performance-based interviews as part of a national search for lecturer-level positions with a primary focus of reference and research services and minimal expectations of teaching information literacy in the classroom. The search committee determined performance-based interviews were successful in establishing candidates’ depth of skill in simulated reference transactions. The authors recommend incorporating an element of unscripted job simulation to employment interviews in libraries of all types.

Publications and Research

On-site reciprocal access to libraries is a valuable benefit of consortial membership. This article details its advantages, offers a sample of some ways in which consortia facilitate such access and reviews the work of the authors, within the SHARES consortium, in this area. Relevant challenges to creating policies, as well as suggestions about how to determine best practices, will also be offered for librarians and their partners to consider and build upon.

From Service Role To Partnership: Faculty Voices On Collaboration With Librarians, Maria A. Perez-Stable, Judith M. Arnold, Lumarie Guth, Patricia F. Vander Meer

Librarians at two research universities surveyed faculty practices and views about collaboration with librarians to gain insight into likely partners and strategies for information literacy (IL) instruction. Quantitative data on methods of collaboration revealed the most often-practiced method of working together was having a librarian deliver an instruction session, followed by developing an online course guide. Statistical differences by disciplinary area and years teaching were examined; experienced faculty reported a greater range of collaboration methods. Thematic analysis of open-ended responses on motives for collaboration, a factor less frequently studied, found the top reason was to improve student IL skills, followed …

The COVID-19 pandemic put a major strain on everyday life. Academic institutions were forced to close, leaving many employees to resort to teleworking. Academic libraries were put in an unusual position, as they strove to provide access to library materials and services, despite limited to no access to the actual sites. This proved to be especially tricky for technical services and special collections departments, which heavily rely on being present at libraries. Therefore, these departments needed to develop solutions that would allow them to continue performing their duties while adhering to stay-at-home orders. This presentation will describe a collaborative project between University faculty and a librarian that connected faculty who teach general education information literacy courses to those who teach upper-level writing intensive courses. The project provided an opportunity for these faculty to participate in a focus group discussion to explore how the courses are aligned and how information literacy courses can support and prepare students for upper-level writing courses. Following the focus group discussion the presenters provided an opportunity for writing and information literacy faculty to take action on what they learned from each other by participating in an assignment redesign workshop. …

To provide more affordable course content to our students and faculty, local data on how students perceive textbook expenses and how the costs impact student success would be necessary in order to advocate to faculty and other stakeholders. This survey, conducted at a mid-sized research public institution, aims to explore student perceptions of textbooks and how these perceptions influence academic success. The results reveal that students feel that the cost of required textbooks is unreasonable and that students are more likely to purchase required textbooks for in-major classes than for elective or general education courses.
